The National Guard in Crestwood, Illinois has a rich history dating back to 1846. At that time, the township was part of the Chicago and North Western Railway. The railway offered its employees free passage to military service in any state or territory, so Crestwood quickly became known for its soldiers. In 1895, the Military Order of Arizona was founded in Crestwood and soon enough, the township had its own Military Order detachment. In 1916, the United States Army raised an 8th Cavalry Regiment from Crestwood as part of World War I. The regiment served until 1921 when it was disbanded. During World War II, Crestwood also saw active duty by members of the Illinois National Guard at various points around the country. On October 10th 1944, a unit from Crestwood responded to an emergency call for help at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Skokie Heights due to a bomb threat against Soldier's Memorial Park nearby. The unit arrived on scene and found four dead bodies inside of a bombed-out building which still stands today! Today, the National Guard remains an important component of local defence and is responsible for providing security at many local events including municipal elections and funerals. The National Guard was in Crestwood, Illinois when the United States federal government first organized. The first units of the National Guard were stationed in nearby Joliet, Illinois. In 1866, the Illinois General Assembly created a militia force to protect state institutions and people from runaway slaves. This force was called the State Militia. The National Guard was not authorized to serve in this militia and it is not known how many troops served in this unit before it disbanded in 1867. The National Guard reappeared in Crestwood as part of the Federal Defense Forces on November 1, 1935. It began serving as a full-time military organization within the Department of Public Safety. On May 3, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt activated the National Guard for World War II and it served throughout that war until September 1945 when it mustered out of service at various points around the country. Since 1949, members of both branches of Congress have been able to enlist with ease through local permits process known as Stand By Your Rights (SBYR). Crestwood is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,879 at the 2010 census. Crestwood was founded in 1851. It is named after the crest of a deer that once grazed there. The town of Crestwood was first settled by Germans and English immigrants in the early 1800s. In 1851, James Minton bought land in what is now Crestwood from the German community for $50 per acre. The town site had been surveyed by John Hennepin in 1825 but never platted because he died before he could do so. In 1857, local farmers organized themselves into a townsite association known as the "First Settlers Association." On July 20, 1861, Crestwood became part of McLean County when it was organized from part of Knox County. In 1865-1966, Crestwood experienced some major flooding due to heavy rains caused by Tropical Storm Tracy which made its way through central Illinois and into Indiana on October 25th and 26th of that year. This event left much damage including bridges and homes being washed away or destroyed; most notably one bridge over the Clear Fork River which remains today as a memorial to this time period of flooding. Crestwood is a small town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. Crestwood is located on the banks of the Chicago River. The first settler in Crestwood was John Haggerty, who arrived in 1837. By 1840 there were six families living here and seventy-eight people working on the riverbank agriculture. In 1847–48 four more families moved to Crestwood from Palatine and Aurora Township; these were followed by other settlers over time. In 1870 a post office was established at Crestwood with three mail carriers serving it daily. A store opened in 1872 and continued to serve as a principal business until 1903 when it closed because of lack of customers. In 1908 two new churches were built: one Baptist and one Methodist. The Methodist church has been preserved as an art museum which now houses both original buildings plus many items from its congregation's collection including furniture, paintings, sculptures, etcetera. This small village was once known for its apple orchards but those have long since disappeared though some remnant trees remain today (though not much). What remains are evidence of early residents' architecture which can be found mostly in single-story frame dwellings that lines the corners of Main Street east and west (the main thoroughfare through town), most notably around what is now First Avenue South where several well-preserved residences still stand today dating back to about 1830 or so when this area had just begun becoming populated by white men for whom Chicago would soon become their new home!
Crestwood was founded in 1811 by John and Ann Crestwood. It became a town in 1824. The first post office opened in 1827. In 1830, the Illinois General Assembly created the Township of Crestwood from part of Iroquois County. The township was disbanded in 1834 and its land divided among other townships.
