Crestwood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Crestwood was platted on May 6, 1853 by Wm. B. Smith and James Hickey as the township of Crestwood-a name which has since been absorbed into neighboring townships. The first post office in Crestwood was established on July 4, 1854; it was discontinued on December 31, 1855 due to low mail usage in that time period. On November 15, 1861, during the American Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant's army passed through Crestwood while encampding near Carbondale for the Battle of Carbondale; many soldiers stopped at the local grocery store for supplies before continuing their march northward. In 1907 a new garage andsmithy were built in Crestwood by John Prentice & Sons Inc.; this business continued until 1978 when it closed down due to economic recession and increasing competition from other stores in the community later that decade. In 1951 an elementary school opened located just east of town along State Route 56; this school continues to serve Crestwood today as well as serving neighboring townships including Arlington Heights and Tinley Park (the original Township name). In 2007-2008 Crestwood completed $5 million worth of renovations to its Main Streetcape which included resurfacing entire street surface with asphalt or concrete blockading one end and white PVC pipe curbside at other ends providing a more modern look while still maintaining some historical elements such as old fashioned streetlights and historic storefronts unchanged since 1957 - making it one of only a few communities in Illinois completely renovated using public dollars during that time frame!
