Crestwood, Illinois had its start in the early 1800s when a group of farmers in this area decided to create a town. The town was named after a hill in Crestwood, Kentucky. The settlers who founded Crestwood were mostly Methodists and they built the first churches and schools in the town. The town grew quickly and by 1832 it had a population of around 150 people. In 1856, Crestwood became an incorporated city and it continued to grow until it reached its current size by 1920.

The village was founded in 1887 by John H. and Eliza A. Prentice as an agricultural community to raise hay for their farm animals; it changed its name to Crestwood in 1919 when the post office moved from Decatur to Crestwood. In 1924, the village had a population of 1,200 and built its first large home; it lost its status as a small town after that. In 1960, Crestwood became an incorporated village with a population of 4,500 people. In 1870, Crestwood became one of the first towns in Illinois to be incorporated as a village. The town rapidly grew and soon had a population of over 1,000 people. Many residents were displaced during the American Civil War, and many homes were destroyed or left abandoned after the war ended. However, through hard work and perseverance, Crestwood emerged as an important community during this time. In 1878, Crestwood underwent an impressive city-building project that saw new buildings constructed including a firehouse and library. This project was made possible by generous donations from local merchants and families who felt invested in the success of their townspeople. Since its incorporation as a village in 1870, Crestwood has played an important role in both local and statewide politics.
