The first coffee roasting company in Crestwood was founded by Ebenezer Scrooge McDuck in 1868. Today, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is the oldest continuously operating coffee company in America and a cornerstone of the community.
Crestwood is a town located in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. Crestwood is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Crestwood was founded in 1853 by Samuel Wirth and his wife Sarah Jane Potter as a small farming community near what is now Orland Park. The Potters were missionaries who arrived in Crestwood to start a Christian school. In 1865, Samuel Wirth's nephew John Fetterman bought the farm that became Crestwood from the Potters. After Fetterman died in 1892, his widow Rebecca took over the farm and ran it until her death in 1925. From 1925 to 1960, Laura Hinton-Fletcher ran the farmhouse as cottage home for many local dignitaries and their families. In 1960, when Kane County became one county, Crestwood became its parish seat with responsibility for all of Kane County including its townships; this change continued until 1990 when village status was restored to Crestwood under then-County Clerk James Joicek Jr.'s plan to merge villages into larger counties while keeping some level of autonomy within each village. The first post office opened in Crest Woods on December 3rd, 1850 (the date of Samuel Wirth's birth). It operated until 1907 when it changed its name to Orland Park after Orland Park Township had been organized around that time; this was also when crestwoods electric light company began service there (it would later become part of American Electric Power). The first store built there was open by Decatur Bargain Store Owner Ozzie Cook on November 25th 1912 (he donated land for the store on which it stands today). During World War II Fountain Place Farms produced munitions for Illinois Army Ammunition Plant at White Sands Arsenal; between 1945 and 1951 about 4500 people worked at Fountain Place Farms producing munitions which included 350 women who did chores such as picking cotton and planting potatoes during harvest season according to historian Doreen Horowitz: "After Pearl Harbor these women found themselves suddenly thrust into an important wartime role...They organized themselves into an effective group known as 'Fountain Place Women'...Their activities raised public awareness about arms production" . They formed their own society which they called 'The Female Mounted Riflemen Association' or 'FMRA'. According to Horowitz: "This WASN'T just some secret club like most other organizations...It had teeth"... Over time FMRA developed branches throughout Kane County including one at Moline where they held meetings until 1975 In 1955 FMRA purchased adjoining parcel from Frank Auerbach for $5000 which has served as their property ever since including annexing adjacent parcels later that same year becoming known as Foster Farmstead vol 1 & 2 . As mentioned earlier Foster Farmstead formally incorporated as a Village on February 22nd 1959 with Doreen Horowitz serving as President/CEO through 2006.. Today there are over 150 residents living on or near Foster Farmstead - more than any other Village in Kane County!
