Crest Hill is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 33,539 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. The first Europeans to visit Crest Hill were French traders and travelers in the early 17th century. In 1812, two brothers named Nicholas and George Rapp came to Crest Hill from Carpentersville with the idea of founding a town on their land east of Carbondale. They named their new settlement after Mount Rushmore National Monument in Wyoming, United States. In 1837, John Hennepin founded Fort Snelling on what is now Park Ridge Road within present-day Crest Hill boundaries. This was followed by other settlements at various points along Park Ridge Road until all but one were abandoned by 1847 because of conflicts over land ownership and boundary delimitation with Carbondale and Other Cities]. The last permanent settler in Crest Hill was James Wirtz who arrived here in 1857. By 1870 there were only ten residents living here; however, it grew rapidly thereafter due to the opening of railroads and prohibition during prohibition times (1888-1918). During Prohibition time many small businesses closed down due to raids by the US Customs Service which resulted in high taxes for these businesses plus losses on trade goods imported into America from abroad. Businesses that did not pay this tax either went out of business or became part of organized crime syndicates known as "the gangs". However, most people in Crest Hill refused to get caught up in these criminal activities and instead operated their own small businesses until recently when global economic conditions have caused many companies to close down across America causing layoffs for many people including those who live inside cities limits like Chicago). Crest Hill, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It is located in the eastern part of the State of Illinois and has a population of about 8,500 people. Crest Hill was once an agricultural community that grew up around several small farms. The first settled area in Crest Hill was on the east side of town where there were some cabins and a few homes dating back to 1836. In 1853, the first post office was established in Crest Hill and it continued to be used until it was discontinued in 1922. The growth of Crest Hill began to slow down during World War II as many businesses closed due to rationing. However, by 1945, Crest Hill had regained its prosperity and growth with new businesses opening up including two grocery stores, four auto parts stores, eleven restaurants and bars, six schools (including one high school), four churches (one Baptist and three Roman Catholicism) as well as more than thirty buildings used for residential purposes such as apartments or condos. In recent years, many historic properties have been restored or updated with new finishes thanks to donations from individuals or organizations such as the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA). Some examples include: The Old Post Office building which is now home to the IHPA’s offices; the old mill which has been renovated into a luxury apartment complex; two churches which have been completely rebuilt with state-of-the-art features; and most notably, the original crest hill jail which has been completely restored and open for tours since 2003. Overall, Crest Hills history can be found throughout its various monuments/landsownings/buildings/property lines that are still being used today by local residents or visitors alike for all sorts of activities both personal and professional including worship services at different churches on Sundays morning along with family reunions etcetera etcetera.
