Crest Hill, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 5,878 at the 2010 census. Crest Hill is located in the eastern edge of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by Maywood to the east andnorth, Westchester to the south, and Hinsdale to the west. The first settlers in Crest Hill were Levi Strauss and his sons Jacob Strauss and Solomon Strauss. Levi Strauss became one of original incorporators of Crest Hill Township on February 14th, 1836. In 1839, John Atherton settled on a farm in present-day Crest Hills which he named for himself - Atherton Heights. By 1860, there were about 100 people living in Crest Hills with a few stores and one school. In 1872 kernels of corn started being grown hereabouts; from this time until World War II there was not any other type of crop grown hereabouts but corn! Even today many residents recall when they would go out into rural township to pick up some fresh ears of corn after harvesting their crops during late summer or fall... There must have been something special about that sweet flavor that drew Americans from all over to these hills! The post-war years were difficult for Crest Hill as manufacturing declined throughout much of America due largely to World War II's impact on production levels around the world. However, family businesses like banking and grocery stores flourished as people found new ways to make money amidst tough times. Today's economy has seen some resurgence with jobs available within urban areas such as Chicago but also growth potential outside those strongholds including services industry across multiple companies such as health insurance provider United Healthcare Corporation (UAL) and cellular phone providers Sprint Nextel (Sprint)and Verizon Wireless (VZ).

Crest Hill is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, located on the border of Chicago and Evanston. The population was 5,612 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Crest Hill was founded by German immigrants in 1854 as a station on the Great Western Railroad. The name derives from Scottish Gaelic "crest" meaning head or summit and "hill" meaning slope or rise. The first settler in Crest Hill was Friedrich Engelhardt who arrived around 1854. Engelhardt built a log cabin on what is now North Main Street. He also raised chickens and pigs and planted corn, wheat, beans and roses near his cabin until 1855 when he sold his land to John Sibley for $275. In 1861 Sibley married Anna Maria Kappe who had come from Weimar, Germany with her family three years earlier. Together they began to raise hogs, cows and horses for meat and milk while also planting vegetables such as peas, carrots and potatoes in their new home which they named Villa Kappe after AnnaMaria's mother (Villa means home). They continued to farm until 1865 when they moved into an old frame house on present-day South Main Street where they lived until their death in 1902. In 1870 Jens Hansen purchased land adjacent to Villa Kappe from AnnaMaria Kappe for $225 which he used to build a grist mill known as Hansen’s Mill with power obtained by means of an old natural gas line that crossed the property between Beardstown Road (now North Avenue) and Elmhurst Avenue [now South Avenue] just east ofpresent day Crest Hill Village Hall [the building still stands]. When the first electric lights were put out in Crest Hill village during 1893 there was much rejoicing among citizens because it meant less work needed to be done outside at night! The mill burned down about 1904 but restoration started shortly thereafter with help from Mrs Lillian Bendixen of Fallbrook Heights who donated her attic which became known as “Mrs Bendixen’s Room”; many items including tools dating back to this time have been found there including an early hand saw made by Captain George diehl & Sons of Chicago . Work proceeded slowly due both to funding shortages within government programs during World War I[and]II but finally ended successfully thanks largely to donations by Mr & Mrs Eberhard Zahmke whose home served as headquarters during restoration operations initially funded through private grants then later popularized through television commercials featuring local dignitaries such as Mayor Richard Moseley; several exhibits related specificallyto this period are currently on display at Resurrection Parish Hall inside former Mr Zahmke garage [this building still stands]. 2/9/2008 - A plaque honoring members of President Abraham Lincoln's Cabinet has been unveiled at nearby Mount Greenwood Cemetery next door toMr Zahmke's Garage commemorating this important period in American history Today Crest Hill remains one of Chicagos' most traditional communities with its close-knit community spirit anchored firmly within its sturdy German culture."
