Crest Hill, Illinois is a small town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. It is located on the west side of Chicago and has a ZIP code of 60514. Crest Hill is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Crest Hill were French explorers in 1679 who named it "Rochester" after their hometown of Rochester, New York. English explorer James Cook renamed it "Crest Hill" in 1770 afterseeing this same peak on his return from his third voyage around the world in 1768-1769. The name stuck and today's name can be seen throughout much of DuPage County as well as parts of neighboring Kane and Lake counties. In 1847 owner John Fenton donated land to build what would become Crest Hill Cemetery which now includes over 100 gravesites dating back to 1847-1892. The first school in Crest Hill opened in 1861 when two students from Palmer Academy built a log cabin near present day Wilson Road and North Avenue for instruction purposes only. In 1865 the first black student attended CrestHill High School through an arrangement with nearby Fullerton Park Elementary School which had opened that year for African Americans seeking education outside their homes or neighborhoods during the Jim Crow era. By 1870 there were 10 white students and 2 black students attending CrestHill High School while only 3 residents were registered with the local village government (1 male, 2 female) out of a total population of 12+. Crest Hill is a census-designated place in Macomb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was founded by General George Armstrong Custer and his family in 1873 as Crest Hill station on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The first post office opened in 1875. In 1902, Crest Hill Station was moved to its present site off of Ulysses Road east of Interstate 95. A shopping center has been built on the old station site adjacent to Illinois State University since 1990. In 1914, Crest Hill had a population of 1,471 people and became an incorporated town with a government headed by a mayor and nine trustees who voted on laws affecting all aspects of life within the town including public health, education and social services. On January 1st 1921 when it merged with neighboring Village of Park Forest to form what is now known as Park Forest-Crest Hill Township (later Addison Township), Crest Hill had a population of 736 people living in 97 handsholds or tracts totaling . In 1945 when Addison Township was disbanded because it no longer fit within the expanding Chicago metropolitan area, CrestHill reverted back to its original township status but lost all but 2 handsheets which were reabsorbed into Park Forest-Cresthill Township upon its merger into that township's government on January 1st 2001 On July 10th 2002 an act was passed by the Illinois General Assembly creating "Macomb County Community College District" which included CrestHill along with all other original townships within Macomb County torn apart by that consolidation process On October 15th 2002 following an agreement reached between Supervisor Jerry Whitehair (D-Addison) and then Superintendent John Hargrave (R-Park Forest) both appointed by then Governor Rod Blagojevich as part of efforts made in response to increasing student enrollment at McHenry County Community Colleges across central Illinois due to suburbanization throughout much of Cook County culminating with many new college campuses established duringBlagojevich's time as governor those same communities also agreed to merge their school districts forming what is now known as "Macomb Community Colleges District"
Crest Hill was founded in 1811 by a man named Daniel Crest and his wife, Esther. The name comes from the crest of a horse that Crest had seen on a hill near his home. Dan Crest used this name for his farmstead, as well as for other places in the area. In 1837, the Crests moved to Elmhurst and changed their names to DeKalb. They remained there until 1951 when they moved to their current location on Crest Hill Road.
