The Coast Guard Gift History in Crest Hill, Illinois begins with the incorporation of the Crest Hill Light Infantry on December 2, 1871. The first commander was Captain John W. Cook. The Coast Guard was established on January 1, 1912 when the Chicago Division was activated and became part of the United States Coast Guard District One. On July 1, 1922, District Two was created and included Crest Hill. On October 15, 1954, District Three were created which included Crest Hill and portions of Round Lake Beach and Bluff City. On November 8, 1961, District Four was activated and included Crest Hill as well as most of Downers Grove. In 1992 the Coast Guard Administration Center moved from Rock Island to Elk Grove Village in Illinois so that all operations could be conducted from one location. At this time Headquarters for both North American Coastal Services (NACS) and International Mercantile Marine Agency (IMA) relocated from New York City to Elk Grove Village also making Cresthill a full service city once again! In 2006 NACS merged with U .S Customs & Border Protection creating a single agency known today as Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Today there are over 5500 members of the Coast Guard garrisoning over 1400 miles of coastline throughout America’s Great Lakes Region including Northeastern Wisconsin; Michigan; Eastern Ontario; Western Canada; Gulf Islands National Seashore; Bahamas; Puerto Rico/Cuba; Dominican Republic/Eritrea etc., providingSearch & Rescue services during natural disasters such as hurricanes Katrina or Rita – along with enforcement activities such as enforcing maritime law in Zephyr Bay Watershed area near Clearwater Harbor on Stonington Peninsula opposite Missouri shoreline

Crest Hill is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,769 at the 2010 census. Crest Hill is part of the Chicago-Naperville-Wicker Park metropolitan area. The first settlers in Crest Hill were John and Rebecca White who arrived in 1824 from Rhode Island. They founded a farm on what is now the east side of town. In 1830, they moved to the west side and started a family cotton plantation which produced cotton until it was replaced by other crops in 1865. In 1871, Crest Hill became a village when it annexed parts of neighboring Village of Mount Prospect In 1897, when Township of Round Lake merged into Cook County, Crest Hill became one of its townships which included most of southcentral Cook County. On November 3, 1908 there was an election for township trustees and Elda Kapp won with over 60% of the vote beating two challengers who had registered as independents
The Coast Guard was founded in 1917 as the United States Revenue Cutter Service. The service became an all-volunteer force in 1922 and began professional training of coast guard officers in 1933. In 1941, the Coast Guard issued its first regulation, which mandated that members wear lifejackets at all times while on duty. The service became a full-time federal government agency in 1947. The Coast Guard has played a critical role in both American and international security since its founding. During World War II, the Coast Guard saved more than fifty thousand lives by ferrying troops and supplies to Allied forces fighting in Europe. In 1971, Congress created the National Security Sealift Command to manage America's largest intermodal container fleet. Today, the Coast Guard plays an important role throughout our country and world by providing emergency response including maritime traffic control, search and rescue operations, air support during missions such as Hurricane Katrina or Operation Neptune's Spear, and coastal protection from Hazardous Environment events such as hurricanes Sandy or Maria.
