Afterward, it relocated to Crest Hill and continued serving as an effective militia force until 1865 when it was disbanded due to lack of support from the state legislature. The 2nd Regiment of Illini Volunteers also arrived in Crest Hill in 1861 and served for a number of years before being disbanded in 1867 due to budget cuts. This regiment had a much more active role during the Civil War than did the 1st or 2nd Regiments which were both largely passive units. In fact, some say that even though these units may not have been as effective as they could have been, their service is significant because it helped recruitment for other regiments which joined forces during THE WAR OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY. However, within 10 years that number had decreased to 2,500 people due to various factors such as World War II and changes in transportation methods which led to more suburban growth across Cook County during this time period. Today there are only a few hundred residents living within close proximity to Crest Hill proper with most residents residing outside of its boundaries on farms or rural properties located miles away from any form of infrastructure or services that could provide support such as education or healthcare options unavailable within their own communities).
