From this base, US bombers attacked Japanese targets in Japan during World War 2. In 1957, Colonel Edward "Buzz" Aldrin became the first person to walk on the moon. This event helped popularize space exploration and led to more donations from individuals and businesses across America. In 1969, General Electric donated $5 million towards research into energy conservation and green technologies. This donation allowed Crest Hill Township to build the GE Power Center which is still used today. Today, members of the USAF contribute their time and money to help preserve our country's airspace, technology advancements, education programs, and more! Crest Hill is a small town in Illinois, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. Crest Hill is located in Kane County. The town of Crest Hill was platted on November 3, 1839 by the joint stock company of John and Martha Hickey. The first post office opened in 1840, and the first settler to arrive was John Purdy. In 1847, Isaac Noyes established a mill here which still operates as a commercial enterprise today. Crest Hill remained an agricultural community until well into the 20th century; however, recent efforts have resulted in some increased activity within the community center and new development around it. In 1911, local resident James Wirt founded what would become Wirt's Drug Store; this store remains a major tourist attraction in Crest Hill today. On December 5th of that year, Wirt donated his land to the town for use as a public square; this square now includes many locally-owned businesses as well as numerous meeting rooms and other infrastructure used by civic organizations such as school board meetings and road work (including an open-air theater). The crest hill post office closed on October 15th of 1990 due to budget cuts; it reopened on October 26th under new management with help from then-Mayor Tom Reilly. At that time, mail service was provided primarily by UPS from suburban Chicago via truckloads rather than through regular postal employees—a unique arrangement at that time
