One result of these programs was the development of the Convair CV-2 into America’s first true jet airliner. After World War II ended in 1945, propeller planes became popular again as passenger transportation after supplanting piston planes in many markets aroundthe world (e.g., Europe). In Country Club Hills, however, propeller planes were not accepted easily by most people because their noise levels were much higher than those of piston cars or trucks—thus causing some inconvenience while driving in area aroundresidence called “the Circle” which surrounded Country Club Hills Golf Course playing fields on three sides). The history of Country Club Hills dates back to 1892 when Anna Hargrave and her husband, Samuel Hargrave, purchased land at what is now the intersection of Ventura Boulevard and Deerfield Road in rural McHenry County. At that time, it was a small farming community with only a few homes. In 1916, Anna's son-in-law James Ladd purchased additional land from the Hargraves and named it "Country Club Hills". In 1922, Ladd donated $5,000 to purchase 100 acres of rolling farmland on which the golf course now stands. Today,Country Club Hills is one of the most popular communities in McHenry County with its many amenities including golf courses (fourteen according to 2009), tennis courts (tennis being especially popular due to its challenging terrain), shops and restaurants. Many residents have made their homes here through purchases or investments over the years - some giving up their own homes in order to join this growing community.
