The National Guard in Collinsville, Illinois was founded on November 20, 1861. The Collinsville National Guard was named after General John P. Kelly who had served as the first commanding officer of the unit when it was organized on that date. The regiment originally consisted of 26 men and was raised under the command of Colonel John Fenton. The regiment arrived in Cairo, Illinois on December 5th and began its service there that same day. On December 7th, 1861, Colonel Fenton decided to move his unit north to Springfield because of the state's secession from the Union. The regiment arrived at Springfield on December 10th and began its service there that same day. In January 1862, Colonel Fenton ordered his unit to Carthage where he would take command of a brigade fighting for General David Urquhart against Confederate forces under General Nathan Bedford Forrest. After three months of hard fighting, Captain George Stephenson’s company won a decisive victory over Confederate forces at Franklin Bridge which helped prove Uncle Sam’s strength in this fight against secessionism. By May 1862, the Regiment had reached Memphis where it joined General Nathaniel Banks' army besieging Fort Donelson which unsuccessfully attempted to secede from Tennessee in February 1863. After several months of siege work, Fort Donelson surrendered on April 12th 1863 just before Christmas time with no loss whatsoever on either side involved in what became known as Vicksburg Campaign (1862-1865). On January 1st 1864 Captain Stephenson's company left Memphis for St Louis where they rejoined General Banks' army besieging Corinth Mississippi River Bridge which successfully crossed that river without loss on October 3rd 1864 (the final battle during Vicksburg Campaign). However one month later an artillery battery belonging to Captain Stephenson's Company became detached fromGeneral Banks' army and proceeded into Confederate territory along with about seventy other Union batteries attacking Corinth bridge crossing under cover of darkness while most soldiers were asleep or visiting their families back home across the Mississippi River. On November 15th 1864 Captains Stephenson & Crocker's Company (now part of 2nd Battalion) Providence Rifles[1] participated in Battle Of Waterford taking part in assaults upriver against large numbers Confederate guns located around Corinth bridgehead leading upriver towards Grand Gulfou Bayou.[2] Despite heavy losses sustained by both companies Captains Stephenson and Crocker led their remaining troops manning small cannon upriver against overwhelming odds achieving some success but ultimately failed to break through Confederate lines resulting in high casualty figures for both captains including one dead soldier and ten wounded officers/men.[3] In 1865 Captain Stephenson resigned from military service due to ill health following a skirmish near Vicksburg Mississippi River Bridge during Which he lost two sons aged six months old each.] After retirement from military service Captain Stephenson moved back home to Collinsville Illinois where he continues Odd Fellows Lodge #503 Daughters lodge until today.]
