The first known settler in Collinsville was Daniel Collins, who arrived in 1812 and built a cabin on the present-day site of Collinsville Elementary School. By 1814, Collinsville had started to grow as a farming community with 200 residents. In 1832, when Cook County was organized into counties, Collinsville became one of the original towns in that county. In 1881, when J. P. Morgan established his railroad line through Cook County and selectedCollinsville as its terminus for passenger and freight trains, the town's population quickly grew to 30000 people by 1889. By 1912, however, according to census reports,[1] Collinsville's population had decreased to 10500 due to increased industrial development around it such as nearby Plainfield and West Side neighborhoods which replaced farmland with factories during that period of rapid growth for Chicagoans. However by 1920s[2], following major construction projects centered around Union Station (now Midway Airport) and other areas within downtown Chicago,[3] there were still over 25000 people living inCollinsville proper[4]. When Interstate 90 was constructed through Cook County in 1991–1992,[5] portions ofCollinsville experienced significant investment from developers as well as heavy traffic congestion due to new high-rise apartment buildings built near University Avenue/I-90 intersection – resultant increase in crime rates along I-90 corridor during early 1990s led some residents to leave their homes and seek greener pastures elsewhere.[6][7][8][9][10] However today some locals continue to live within boundaries defined by I-90 while others commute into downtownChicago each day without experiencing any negative consequences from this highway mileposting arrangement; this has been referred to as "the collinwood effect".[11][12][13] A total of 6017 individuals lived within borders defined by I-290 between 1990–2010:[14]: 4493 (68%) resided within city limits while 1149 (15%) resided outside city limits;[15]: 2136 (30%) reported being employed full time year round while 892 (10%) reported working remotely;[16]: 723 (11%) reported having no health insurance coverage whatsoever while 499 (5%) did not report any kind of healthcare provider affiliation; 547 citizens (~25% additional over 1990 preia) selfreported owning firearms only for personal protection purposes; 453 citizens (~22% additional over1990 preia) selfreported reporting being victims or perpetrators of violent crime only once per year last year
