In 1830, Captain Collins platted the village of Collinsville on a small tract of land he had purchased from David Sinclair. At that time, Collinsville consisted of only a few homes and a schoolhouse. In 1836, Captain Collins sold his interest in the village to George Stephenson, who developed it into one of the most successful agricultural towns in Illinois. By 1840,Collinsville had acquired a population of over 100 people and boasted an impressive variety of businesses including groceries, flour mills, blacksmiths and wagonmakers. During this time period,Collinsville also became known as one of the most important transportation hubs in north-central Illinois because its location made it easy to get goods to markets across the state. In 1854, Major General Zachary Taylor proposed creating a new U.S.Army post at Springfield located just east of Collinsville on land donated by Samuel Hockenberry III. After much deliberation and consideration,the army chose instead to establish Fort Nieman at Jacksonville Heights near present-day Chicago due to its strategic location within reachof both New York City and Mexico City as well as its potential for growth as an Army garrisontown.
