Cicero, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. Cicero was founded by John Cicero in 1817 and has been the seat of government since 1871. The population was 13,996 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was named after Julius Caesar because he had been born there in 1775 and died in 44 BC. John Cicero is said to have inspired George Washington to become an American leader and to have helped found the United States Constitution. John Fitch built the first store on Main Street in Cicero in 1822 and also opened the first post office there. The first doctor in Cicero was Dr. James Hickey who served from 1824 until his death in 1830. He operated a dispensary on Second Street from 1829 until his death six years later. A number of other prominent citizens were associated with Cicero during its early days: Jacob Thorndike (a lawyer), Ebenezer Porter (abuilder), Amos Kendall (a local merchant), Edward Cushman (an admiral), Isaac Norris (the father of President Abraham Lincoln) and Pius IX's private secretary Cardinal Newman lived hereabouts while they attended college or pursued religious studies abroad before returning to serve their community as cardinals or bishops during America's great period of transition called "The Gilded Age." In 1870, when Illinois became a state, Cicero became one of its original towns within Cook County along with Belmont, Northfield, Plainfield, Arlington Heights and Lawndale
