Cicero is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2000 census. Cicero is one of the oldest towns in Kane County and has been around since 1836. It is also one of the most recent towns to be founded in Kane County. The town was named after Marcus Tullius Cicero, an Roman general and politician who lived in Rome during the height of its power and influence. Cicero is located on State Route 11 about 15 miles east of Chicago. Cicero began as a small village called Unadilla on the shores of Lake Michigan just south of present-day Cicero Township. In 1836, John Sibley founded what would become Cicero with his own two dollars from his land grant from President James Kahlil Gibbons. The first post office was established in Indianola on July 12th, 1837 (the date now honored as Cicero's patron saint). The Townsite Act of 1840 provided for three wards within the new township: North Ward (later Cook County), East Ward (later Monroe County), and South Ward (later Will County). On November 3rd,1841, unincorporated areas east and north of Cookstown were added to Cicero Township; these areas are now part of Goodrich Township. The Act stated that "no part or parcel thereof shall be taken by sale or purchase" but only donated "for public use." The initial population included 350 people; by 1850 it had grown to 1,000 people due largely to waves of immigration brought over by the American Civil War including many Irishmen who had fled famine in their homeland. In 1865 William Gilmore Simons donated 160 acres along State Route 11 which became known as Simons Park after him and today remains one Of Kane County's most important cultural landmarks dating back to this time period including a large bandstand/civic center/parks area complete with fountain and sculpture designed by McKimson Brothers Architects which still stands today
