The Chicago Heights Naval Station was one of the first naval stations in the United States. It opened on August 1, 1851 as the Chicago Navy Yard. The station served as a place where sailors could be trained and crewed ships were built. In 1865, the navy station was renamed after Admiral David Dixon Porter, who had played an important role in helping to end the American Civil War. The navy station closed on October 15, 1966, after more than 50 years of service. On November 8, 1920, President Warren G Harding dedicated the USS Quincy (AO-4) at Chicago Heights Naval Station. This ship was modifications to USS Swenzer (AO-2). Quincy was named for Rear Admiral Richard Fitch Quincy and served as flagship of Commander Task Force Fourteen during World War I and as flagship of Commander Task Force Seventeen during World War II. The ship cost $1 million and it took almost 10 years to build her. Quincy served as a training ship for members of both US Marine Corps units that fought in World War II and also acted as a hotel while moored at various naval stations around America during the war. She is now docked at Pier 71 at City Hall Park in downtown Chicago Heights!

The neighborhoods are twin-villages, each containing about 1,500 residents. They began as Polish villages that were founded in 1892 on land now part of the University Area. The area was first settled by Germans who arrived in what is now Chicago during the early 1800s. By 1908, all of Chicago had been annexed into Cook County and many German-owned businesses were destroyed in what is known as the Great Fire of 1871. The area that would become Chicago Heights was developed largely through white Settlement Act efforts starting around 1870 and continuing until 1940 when most black residents moved into areas such as Rogers Park and Lawndale because these areas were more affordable and accessible than downtown or operationally South Side Drive. The first blacks to live here arrived with waves of European immigrants beginning around 1880s looking for work opportunities in PROGRESSIVE WHITE AMERICA! They initially cleared land for gardens, churches, schools and later homes which helped sustain some African Americans throughout their journey westward from Africa Determined to break away from plantation life & be their own individual people - they named their new community "Chicago Heights."

The first Chicago Heights development was established in 1887 when eight families bought a half-acre (1 ha) of land at 17th and North Dearborn Streets. This tract became known as "Chicago Heights". The name was derived from a height of hills that dominated what is now part of Foster Park. In 1895, two blocks east of where Chicago Heights stands today, four families purchased an additional 1/4 acre (0.36 ha) for $100 from Samuel Hays & Company.
