Chicago Heights, Illinois is a census-designated place in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,811 at the 2010 census. Chicago Heights is bordered by the city of Chicago to the south and west, and Waukegan to the north. It is part of the Gary–Phoenix metropolitan area. The name "Chicago Heights" was given to a tract of land that included present-day Chicago and parts of what are now North Side and South Side streets. The original settlers were farmers who arrived from New England in 1824 after being displaced by Indian Wars fought by General Winfield Scott. They named their new town after Mount Hope Cemetery in Boston where many of their relatives were buried. Today's Chicago Heights is located on what was once the eastern edge of North Side Township (now Westchester).
