Chatham is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Chatham was founded in 1855 by Nicholas Chatham and his family as a small hamlet on the banks of the Fox River which flows through Kane County. In 1865 Chatham became an incorporated town after first being proposed by John P. Morrell, who also served as its first mayor. The Village of Chatham was formed from parts of two other villages founded in 1855- Starksville to the east and Northbrook to the west - both by Nicholas Chatham's son-in-law John Burtchman. The new towns were built on land donated by farmers in each village who had seen promise for growth when they saw that their boundaries would remain largely unchanged despite changes within Kane County over time. Each town offered schools, churches, businesses and homes to those who chose to join it; residents maintained their own social institutions within their communities without needing to leave them for work or school purposes. Chatham exploded into existence following World War I when demand for munitions skyrocketed due to America's entry into conflict with Germany and Austria-Hungary over territory in Serbia and Hungary; production at local factories quickly outstripped available supply so much so that demand forced many small businesses and individual citizens to abandon townspeople altogether and open stores or manufacturing plants elsewhere in order to keep up with production quotas set by the meatpacking industry which depended upon ample supplies of cornmeal, flour, pork products and other goods manufactured hereabouts for export across Great Lakes states such as Illinois

The first settler in Chatham was John Fenton who arrived on February 12, 1815. The village was platted on July 7, 1825 by a group of men led by Captain John Settle and Dr. James Larkin. It received its name from the town of Chatham in Kent County, England which had been their original destination for goods arriving at the American port of Batavia on the Great Lakes. In 1830-31 Josiah Houghton built a log cabin near present day intersection of US 6 and IL 9
