The history of the Chatham Police Department gift shop dates back to 1954. It was started by Captain Joe and Mrs. Johnnie Hanks as a way for officers to buy gifts for their families. The shop has grown over the years, and now operates out of four locations in the city. The gift shop is open from 9am to 6pm weekdays and 10am to 5pm on Saturday; and from 9am to 3pm on Sunday. The shop offers a wide variety of items, including police uniforms, hats, badges, handcuffs, radios, handguns and more. Chatham, Illinois is a small town located in the Carbondale-Munster area of southern Illinois. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. Chatham is one of thirteen towns in Carbondale Township. The name "Chatham" comes from two sources: One source says it originates from the old English word "Cheam", meaning a meadow where cows grazed, while another source claims that the name derives from "hathorn", meaning "a large rock". According to one account, the first settler in Chatham was John Horsfall, who arrived in 1829. He built a cabin on what is now State Street and named it after his home town of Hathorn in England. In 1836, Levi Todd moved to Chatham and started purchasing land around what is now State Street and High Street. In 1840, he started construction on a log cabin called Northwoods which still stands today near present day Beech Avenue and Eastern Highway. The following year he married Rachel Cushman and soon afterwards began farming with his new wife and their children on property that now includes much of what is now downtown Chatham. In 1846, LeviTodd sold some of his land to Rufus Earle for $3 per acre; this purchase allowed Earle to build a road between Carbondale and Monmouth counties. By 1860, ownership of most of present day downtown Chatham had passed through various hands including two families:the Earles who owned most of north central corner between First and Second streets until 1861 when they sold all their holdings to Jethro Gibbs; as well as Cornelius Paine who acquired part of east side between Fifth street (now University Boulevard)and Seventh street (now State Street). By 1870 about half way down StateStreet there was only one house left standingolling out over open fieldsbesides three stores which had closed by then:(Gibbs store opened 1865), Wm Halsey's grocery store(1868), & Fenton’s farm shop(1872). Only newly built buildings such as schools etc were built during this time period like Methodist Episcopal Church (1881) & Presbyterian church (1892). It should be noted that many residents abandoned downtown Chatham during prohibition years because drinking became an illegal act in chicago In 1914 Clarence Herrington bought Lots 1-3 along current Third Street just south of Main Street for $2 an acre; this would become Herrington Park which currently has a playground& basketball court among other features . As early as 1917 local resident Willard Gentry started advertising lot 3 for sale at $5 an acre although no action took place until 1923 when Gentry donated trees to create Harmon Park . Park development continued apacently with lots being donated by locals followed by Sears department store donation(1935), National Bank donation(1939), Ford dealership donation(1945), Chrysler plant gift(1949)), Brownie restaurant gift (1974)) culminating with Chicago Dept Store gift(1987). park boundaries have changed few times since its inception

Chatham is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was founded by Major General Enoch Chatham and his family in 1838 as a post office called "Cedar Grove." Cedar Grove served as the home of the Chatham family until 1854 when they moved to what is now known as West Dundee. In 1881, major General John M. Richardson renamed Chatham after Commodore John Chatham, one of the officers who fought against Spain during the Spanish-American War. During World War II, local troops served in Europe and were awarded medals from President Franklin D. Roosevelt for their service there. Many residents serving in military or government roles have families living here today including Congressman Adam Schiff (D-Illinois), Chairman Devin Nunes (R-California) and Ambassador Daniel Hesse (JH). Today, Chatham remains an agricultural community with a wide variety of crops grown such as corn, soybeans, peas, beans and squash. The town also has a few businesses that provide services such as plumbing and heating; however, most residents rely on agriculture to support their lives primarily through raising livestock and farming produce
Chatham was laid out in 1824 by Nicholas Chatham, a Revolutionary War veteran and the grandson of the first U.S. president, George Washington. The town's nucleus consisted of a small group of farmers and their families, who built homes around a square-shaped common. By 1830, the population had swelled to 100 people, and by 1840 it had reached 300. In 1846, Chatham became the seat of District 5 in Illinois after Illinois split into three parts following the Mexican-American War. The town remained an important center until it declined in importance during the 19th century as its residents moved to larger towns or left for railroad settlements near Chicago or Milwaukee.
