The United States Naval Forces Europe (USNFE) is a naval forces organization composed of the military branches of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, as well as the air force component, The United States European Command (USEUC). The purpose of USNFE is to provide support for NATO defense operations in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. In 1949, the Commander in Chief, U.S. Naval Forces Europe was transferred from Commander in Chief, Atlantic Fleet to Commander in Chief, USNFE effective 1 October 1949 under Operation Frequent Wind. This change removed COCHAGA from responsibility for all maritime activities within EUROPEAN Waters and vested this authority with an additional officer - Commodore John Waddell who concurrently served as Deputy Director ofFleet Operations and Plans at Headquarters Norfolk Naval Shipyard until his retirement on 1 July 1969. On 15 May 1970 Commodore Waddell was retired by order of then Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird following his unsuccessful election to succeed Admiral Everett LYNDON as Chairman of USNFE board during next year's term Limits debates; Commodore Waddell had been serving since 1 January 1969 when he had been confirmed by Senate over Vice Admiral James Fenton Dockery who had been acting Chairman at that time pending confirmation from Secretary Laird On 1 July 1969 Rear Admiral David Yeoman became commander Amphibious Force Europa which included elements embarked on USS Vincennes (AF-4) at Gibraltar where they were relieved by USS Constellation (CV-64). Chatham is a town in Chatham County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,154 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Carbondale–Mishawaka, IL-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Chatham Township was Captain John Willard who arrived on July 4, 1817. He named his township after the fortress of Chatham near Edinburgh in Scotland which he had seen from his ship on his way to America. Captain Willard's mansion still stands and can be toured today as part of the Carbondale Museum of History and Industry. In 1834, Major John Prentice built a cotton gin and distillery just west of town on what is now State Road 9A. Prentice's gin made excellent whiskey which helped make Chatham an important center for alcoholic commerce during the early 19th century. In 1853, David Silliman bought property east of town from Major Prentice and developed it into a farmstead called "Silliman's Prairie." Silliman operated a sawmill and gristmill along with several other businesses until he sold them all to J.H Plympton in 1865 for $2 million dollars dollar including land that now forms part of Carbondale Township. Plymouth became one of the largest landowners in Illinois during this time period and used their power to create many transportation improvements such as Interurban Railroad lines that linked Carbondale with Chicago through Champaign-Urbana (then Cook County). Jokingly referred to as "Plymouthsville," this area now includes much historic homes east of Highway 33 known as Old Main Street (or Plymouth Drive) while west side streets retain their original nameakes such as Second Avenue or Maple Street (formerly Washington Avenue). In 1886 when Interstate highways were being planned, Chatham was chosen as site for one of the four interchanges between I-65 and I-90 which would become known collectively as "the Loop" because they connected Chicago with its various suburbs across Lake Michigan and Indiana around Peoria/Decatur County
