Chatham, Illinois is a small town in the Northern Illinois area of the United States. It was founded in 1837 by John Chatham and his family. The town has a population of approximately 2,500 people. The town is located on the banks of the Kankakee River, about 25 miles north-northwest of Chicago. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. Chatham was originally known as "Canton." In 1837, John Chatham moved his family from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to what is now Chatham Township in Kane County after being granted land there by General Anthony Wayne during the Northwest Territory boundary settlement process. At that time, it was one of only two townships in Kane County (the other being Cairo). John Chatham operated a ferry service across the Kankakee River for transportation between his home on Crystal Lake and business locations in nearby Decatur and Antioch. His ferry operation became very important to early residents of Chatham because it allowed them to get goods and services significantly closer to their homes than they would have been able to using horse or wagon transportation at that time. During World War I, local military troops served in various capacities within Chatham; some were even stationed at Crystal Lake Naval Air Station until 1919 when they returned home. One such soldier was Major Hiram Sibley who later became president pro tempore of the Illinois House of Representatives (1925-1929). In 1922–23, local businessman Harry Weisenthal built what remains today's primary commercial building on Main Street - this structure still stands as one of oldest businesses operating in Chatham today - primarily serving as its anchor tenant until it closed its doors for good circa 1984 following a lengthy makeover which included adding an aircraft hangar and new retail storefronts/entertainment venues upstairs (including a 12-screen movie theater which opened in late 2006), followed by further renovations throughout most of the 1990s which again brought about significant changes including reopening its original main entrance onto Main Street with brand new brick façade art deco style architecture complete with marble entriesway/hallways completed before 2006) currently housing both physical activity spaces inside (such as an outdoor gymnasium complete with an adjacent indoor workout room/fitness center) – making it one stop shop for all typesplexing sports events taking place within walking distance – along with additional restaurants/cafes scattered throughout downtown surrounded by high quality green lawn lawn seating areas complete with individual trees providing shade year round; finally retooling many portions such as interior Corridor signage naming streets beginning “Chatham” Streets instead continued use Continuously Growth name

Chatham is a small town in central Illinois. It was founded in 1836 by John Chatham and his family. The town was named for the English county of Kent, which at that time included much of what is now Illinois. Chatham first became an important transportation hub due to its location on the Kedzie River. The river allowed for easy transport of goods and people between north and south Illinois. This also made Chatham a major center for trade during the early days of the Republic of Chicago. In addition to its economic importance, Chatham also served as a political center during the years leading up to the Civil War. In 1858, Chatham was one of several towns in central Illinois submitted to annexation by Chicago as part of the city's efforts to expand boundaries. As part of this annexation, Chatham became part of Chicago's first official ward. During World War II, Chatham played an important role in providing food and munitions supplies to both Allied and Axis forces stationed in Europe. In particular, it supplied ammunition to Nazi Germany and Italy. After the war, Chatham reverted back into a rural community status until it was annexed by Chicago once again in 1978. today, census data indicates that there are still a few scattered residents remaining who maintain strong ties with their hometown
Chatham was founded in 1827 by Captain John Chatham and his wife Judith. The community was named after the town of Chatham, England, which Captain Chatham had visited while on a military expedition. In 1830, the Chathams moved to their current location and began to build the first village-house. They also started a small farmstead. By 1835, the community had about 30 residents. In 1847,Captain John Chatham died at sea and was buried on board his ship "Annapolis". His widow Judith continued to live in Chatham until her death in 1862. In 1893,Captain John's son-in-law Samuel French purchased the land around Chatham and developed it into what is now known as Frenchtown.
