However, due to low population growth rates throughout most of Sangamon County during the late 19th century-early 20th century (due largely to bad luck with minerals – including poor land management decisions by county officials), not many new businesses sprang up around downtown Chicagoland during this time period; instead most people living near city boundaries established themselves as independent farmers or professionals outside of Chatham itself. This stagnation led some residents to develop feelings of isolationism within their own community; while others saw this situation as an opportunity for advancement through hard work – learning how to manage difficult terrain and accessible resources better than those within urban areas – both groups enjoyed some level degree cultural interaction with each other despite continuing cultural differences between them2 . Despite this lack of growth potential - or perhaps because thereof - numerous attractions began developing around downtown Chicagoland thanks specifically to soldiers quartered nearby at Camp Chase Army Base during World War I: such as movie theaters (such as Majestic Theatre), ball games (like DeKalb Park Association Grounds Cricket Club matches), dance halls (such as Excelsior Dance Hall), food stores (like Goudy's Opera House Store & Cafe), auto parts dealerships (!?), Sears & Roebuck department stores (!?), etc4 . These attractions quickly gained popularity among locals who found entertainment value within these types of "village" type activities5 ; furthermore these destinations provided social opportunities for young men experiencing military service6 . By 1923-24 additional primary commercial interests had sprung up around downtown Chicagoland including insurance companies (#7 ), attorneys (#8 ), garment workers (#9 ), pharmacies (#10 ), machine shops (#11 ), breweries (~12 ), lumber yards (~13 )7 , restaurants (~14 ), bowling alleys (~15 )8 , etc9 ; all focusing primarily on services related to central business districts located inside urban areas10 ..
