Chatham is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,596 at the 2010 census. Chatham was founded on May 15, 1836 by Captain John Chatham and his wife, Eliza. The first settlers in the area were men from New England who arrived in 1835. In 1840, Captain John Chatham's son-in-law George Peddle settled here and began to grow corn and raised cattle. By 1865, there were about seventy residents living hereabouts. In 1876–77 the Chicago & Northwestern Railway built a line from Joliet to Crystal City; this created a new demand for food products in the area and led to increased agricultural production. At that time there were about ninety farmers living in Chatham Township (now part of Crystal City). In 1915–16 two large mills closed down: one near Crystal City by the railroad tracks and another on the east side of town by the river. This caused a great deal of unemployment as many people lost their jobs because they could not get work with new machines coming into existence. However, some people managed to keep their businesses going through creative ways like using old machinery or adapting it to use more modern techniques. After World War I ended things went back upswing; however during World War II much of what had been developed around these two mills came to an end when war broke out and production was diverted towards munitions plants throughout Illinois instead of food products which needed no military procurement. It wasn't until after World War II that things started picking up again with farmers starting to produce crops such as fruits and vegetables as well as livestock such as cows, pigs, horses etc.; however due to changing demographics since then many people have left the town over economic reasons alone making Chatham one of those towns where most people know very little about its past or how it compares today with other places within Cook County/Illinois
