Chatham was founded in 1851 and was named for Rear Admiral John Chatham. The first post office in Chatham was established on November 8, 1851, and remained open until it closed on July 6, 1861. The first settler to arrive in what is now Chatham Township was James Hargrave. He built a cabin from logs he collected from the river bottom near present-day Chiattonee Trail Road and then named his new settlement after himself, which is how it acquired its current name of Chatham. In 1853, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill naming the township after Rear Admiral John Chatham as one of several honors presented to him during his visit to Illinois that year. The community developed quickly because of its location close to major transportation routes and access to food storage and water resources."
