The history of the National Guard in Charleston, Illinois can be traced back to 1881. At that time, Charleston was known as the "Cradle of the Confederacy." The city was home to a large military garrison and numerous armories. The guard was created as part of the Reconstruction policies of President Ulysses S. Grant after the Civil War. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia and slavery was abolished in America. The Missouri Compromise did not include slavery and therefore black Americans continued to be enslaved throughout most of America until about 1870. Consequently, many black soldiers from South Carolina fought for their former masters during the Civil War. In 1881, General John Hennepin organized a unit of Infantry called the National Guardsmen out of local militia companies that had been disbanded during Reconstruction. From this unit, General Hennepin organized a separate battalion (the 1st Battalion) which became Company A of the 2nd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry on October 15th, 1881. On November 3rd, 1881 Company A was reorganized into rifle company A under Captain Edward Meeks and Headquarters Company became Company B on January 1st, 1882 with Captain George Ruggles as its first commander. Captain Ruggles served with Company B until his death on February 5th 1888 after wounds received in an engagement at White Sands Plantation near Cairo where he commanded elements engaged against Confederate forces attempting to retreat following a Union victory over them two days earlier On January 8th 1886 Major James Wickersham assumed command from Captain Ruggles and Companies A-B were redesignated as Troop C (1st Battalion) attached to 4th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry effective February 14th 1886 Troop C participated in assaults upon Fort Donelson April 10-12 1863 , Yazoo Pass April 24 1862 Franklin Barracks June 17 1861 Knoxville September 9 1861 Corinth August 20 1862 Murfreesboro July 12 1865 Chattanooga March 6 1865 Petersburg December 11 1865

Charleston is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Charleston was Nicholas Hennepin in 1837. The town name was chosen as an honor to General William Henry Harrison who had died only two years previously. By 1860, most of the original settlers had either moved away or died from natural causes; however, a small group of German immigrants stayed and built a log cabin on a hill overlooking the river which still stands today. In 1865, Confederate General John Crouch surrendered his army at Appomattox Court House in Virginia and all remaining Union forces were mustered out of Illinois. This left Charleston with no military significance and fell into disrepair for many years until it was revived by developer Don Ladd in the early 1990s when he started construction on what would become known as "the city", making it one of southwestern Illinois' fastest-growing communities. Today, Charleston boasts world-renowned museums including the Museum of African American History and Culture (MAAHC), located within former All Souls Unitarian Church; the largest African American cemetery in America; stately homes such as Randolph Hill Mansion and First Congregational church which still stand; antique shops, restaurants, nightlife and more – making it one of southern Illinois' most vibrant cities and an essential stop on any journey through its rich history

Fenton founded a plantation on what is now Sandusky Street. In 1815, Samuel Kirkland purchased Fenton’s land and began to grow corn on his property which he named Kirkland Place after himself. By 1840, additional settlers had arrived in Charleston and by 1850, there were over 100 citizens living here. During the early years of this community, many people worked on plantations while others lived near town to purchase goods they needed or exported their products to other markets. After emancipation in 1865, many black Americans moved into Charleston seeking opportunities within white society where they could thrive. Many African Americans found work as servants or workers on white households until well into the 20th century when race relations changed rapidly due to advancements made by African Americans throughout America during that time period
Charleston, Illinois was founded in 1837 by African Americans. The city's first mayor, Elijah Cook, was black and its first mayor pro tempore, James Hilliard, was white. In 1845 the city had a population of 100 people. By 1860 Charleston had a population of 350 people and by 1870 it had a population of 1,500 people. The city's first school was built in 1839.
