Charleston, Illinois is a small town located in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 3,590 at the 2010 census. The name Charleston comes from the English word "Cherokee" which means "place of the Cherokee." The first white settlers in what is now Charleston were Englishmen who arrived in 1765. They began to live near the mouth of the Wabash River and built a fort to protect their shipping interests. Afterward they developed a commercial trade with Native Americans and other settlers living along the river. The community was founded on November 15, 1824 by John Fitch and his brother James Fitch as a result of their purchase of three acres (1 km²) of land at present-day Mason Street and Asbury Avenue from Nathaniel Duncan. By 1840, much had changed since those early days: African Americans had come to Charleston to work in its mills and factories; smallpox had ravaged much of Europe during the 1830s; and industry had exploded in Chicago following America's entry into World War I. In 1849, when slavery was abolished in Illinois, many blacks decided to move to Charleston permanently due to its racial segregation laws then in force there. In 1889 Charleston became an incorporated village when all but one block on Asbury Avenue were annexed by town for that purpose. That year also saw the opening of its first full-service grocery store - A&P - followed by two more within five years. Business boomed through World War II as goods shortages led people to seek opportunities outside country or city limits; however, growth slowed after Hiroshima bombing destroyed most major markets around 1945. Many residents left for greener pastures after that cataclysmic event; however, some remain until this day committed to making their community better than it once was while preserving cultural heritage items like gingerbread houses that have been popular here since childhood memories started playing here on Christmas morning back when everyone knew everyone's name
