It is part of the Champaign-Urbana metropolitan area. The village was organized in 1872 and named for Channahon County, Iowa. A post office was established in 1875, and it changed its name to Channahon in 1890. The first store opened in 1903. In 1912, the first school was erected; it served as a one-room schoolhouse until 1924 when a larger building was built. In 1954, Channahon became a city and has since grown with annexations from other villages withinChampaign-Urbana Metropolitan Area. Channahon is a small town in Douglas County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Channahon was founded by Welsh immigrants in 1847 and named for their leader, Captain John Channahon. It became a village in 1907. The post office closed in 1971, but the ZIP code for Channahon has not changed since then. In 1870, David Hadden organized what would become the Peoria School District No. 1 and purchased land east of present-day Channahon to build a schoolhouse and associated buildings. After purchasing additional land from Hadden's heirs, the school district built its first building on present-day Boulevard Avenue in 1871. In 1893, when Douglas County was created, Channahon became part of it and boundary changes resulted in it annexing parts of neighboring townships: North Park (now Bloomington) in 1899; White Bear Grove (now West Dundee) in 1902; and South Park (now Elmhurst) in 1907. In 1920–21, when Douglas County merged with Cook County to form Chicago Area Community College District No. 7A,[1] Channahon joined that college as an affiliate campus.[2] During World War II, many residents worked at Boeing plants located outside of Chicago; as a result of this military industrial complex nearby growth ensued throughout 1940s into 1950s with new single-family homes popping up all over town center while schools were constructed on or near the now obsolete ditches established back then to contain ballfields used byouth boys during summertime campouts which continued until after 1960s due to city planning directives that removed most open space within blocks radius around major downtown streetscape developments making way for high rises tower apartments/condos/mall/strip malls etc along with residential neighborhoods like Elk Grove Village[3][4][5][6][7][8] though some people who still live there claim they have always owned property there even before city limits were set forth years later midst heated public debate about loss of community character & values resultant from dense development around large metropolis becoming increasingly unaffordable for working class families regardless real estate prices have continued spiraling upwards ever since creating today’s massive housing crisis only exacerbated by global economic recession
