The town was founded in 1873 by George M. Brown and his family as a post office on the site of what is now Channahon High School. It became a town in 1881 and continued to grow until it had a population of 2,500 in 1960. The growth stopped after that point, and the population has stayed below 1,500 since then. Since its establishment as a town, Channahon has relied heavily on agriculture for its economy. Today, most of the town's businesses are involved with manufacturing or services such as groceries and transportation. The community currently consists of just two churches - First Baptist Church and Methodist Episcopal Church - but plans are underway to build more than one church over time. Channahon is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 513 at the 2010 census. Channahon was founded in 1841 by John Fitch and his wife Jane. It is named after Channahon Township, Pennsylvania, which Fitch had visited while on a military expedition to seek mineral rights there in 1838. Channahon became an incorporated village in 1907. In 1944, it merged with neighboring village of Spencer to form the larger Channahon-Spencer Village Corporation. The village corporation was dissolved in 2002 and its assets were donated to the Sangamon County Historical Society for use as a museum and research center. The first settler at Channahon was John Fitch who arrived in 1841 from Cumberland Township, Pennsylvania. He built a cabin on the site that stands today known as Fitch's Cabin #2; this cabin served as the nucleus of what would become Channahon. The first post office at Channahon was established in 1847; it continued to be called Pella until 1865 when it changed its name to Channaonee after Anna (the daughter of Nicholas) Hagerty of Spencer Township; this change followed the incorporation of those two villages into one entity under US Post Office rule effective July 1, 1907. The first school building constructed at Channaonee was erected by local teacher Sarah Goodall between 1848 and 1850 following her purchase of land east of present day Trycker Road for educational purposes which she divided among her pupils as part of her benevolent activities during that time frame. Schooling finally began within walking distance from each home throughout much of what is now Sangamon County beginning with instruction provided by Miss Goodall herself circa 1850 through 1870 via homemade chalk boards placed alongsideways from house doors - an innovation still operationally used today! In addition to providing education for locals children residing within reach during early yearschooling opportunities were also available for students living far away or attending schools operated outside our township boundaries - albeit with accompanying expenses! By 1860 both girls' schools had closed due primarily to lack of enrollment but continuing efforts by Mrs Goodall resulted later that year in construction within our borders (now Trycker Road) of not only a new Girls' School but also an enlarged boys' school - annexing what remained side-by-side adjacent male/female restrooms / privy rooms location currently occupied thereby!! A west wing addition completed circa 1912 provides additional facilities including virtually all modern equipment! With increased populations growth necessitated more buildings however many original structures remain largely unchanged well into our current era!
