Channahon, Illinois was first settled in 1836 bynode Indian immigrants from the Ohio Valley. The community was named after Jacob Channahon, a pioneer settler. In 1859, Channahon became a town and was incorporated as a village in 1865. The population of Channahon grew rapidly during the 19th century; it reached its peak in 1907 with 1,811 residents. However, the population declined during the 20th century and currently resides at 715 residents. The first coffee shops opened in Channahon in the early 1900s. By 1916, there were six coffee shops operating within the town limits. During World War II, many local businesses closed due to shortages of war supplies and labor. However, one business reopened after the war and continued to serve coffee until 1971 when it switched to hands-free phone service. The last commercial coffee shop closed in 1991.
Channahon is located in the far northeast corner of Illinois, about sixty miles from the city of Chicago. It has a population of just over one thousand people and is an agricultural community with rolling hills and lovely gardens. The town was founded in 1868 by Methodist missionaries and their families as a place where they could preach and administer justice. In the 16th century, Dutch traders started smuggling coffee seeds from Arabic markets into the Netherlands, resulting in a rise of coffee production in that country. By 1590, Dutch traders had founded more than 100 factories producing large quantities of coffee. French traders began importing Indonesian beans in 1600, which led to increased French- Indonesian trade. Between 1660 and 1795, Dutch East India Company merchants shipped 1 million pounds of Java rice to France each year; this contributed greatly to French colonialism in Southeast Asia. The Portuguese also developed a significant role in espresso production through their trading networks within Europe and South America. Coffee production declined during the 18th century due to technological advances such as machine learning (the development of frothing milk systems), but resumed after World War II thanks to developments such as chemical roasting (which gives coffees a darker color) and cold pressing (a technique where beans are pulled from trees without being dried). In 2018, world market output of bean went up by 2% due to increase demand from China
There is no one definitive account of the first coffee beans. In fact, there are many different sources that claim to have been the first to roast and sell coffee. Some believe that the Arabians were the first to grow coffee, while others credit Ethiopian slaves with starting the Java Coffee Bean Cultivation in 1795. The beans that we know today were likely grown in Africa or Indonesia before being transported to Europe and then America in the 18th century.
Channahon, Illinois is a small town in the northern Illinois County seat of St. Clair County. Channahon was founded by the Potawatomi people in 1812. The village was named after Channahon Creek, which flows through it. In 1872, the county seat was moved from Channahon to Ottawa and the name of the town changed to Ottawa-Channahon. The population of Channahon was 2,611 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Channahon was James Waddell in 1812 who built a cabin on what is now Ulysses Road. He and his wife were the first generation of settlers in this area and are buried at Oak Hill Cemetery north of town. In 1830, John Pritchett came to live in this area and began farming land around present day Parkersburg east of town on what is now Main Street. By 1840, there were 11 families living hereabouts with total acres under cultivation equal to that today (Figure 1). In 1871, when Ottawa-Channahon became a county within St Clair County, Jens Olsen took over management of Parkersburg farmstead for local residents until he sold it in 1902 to Leland Stanford Jr., founder and director of Stanford University (Figure 2). That same year saw an influx of fresh immigrants as railroads arrived connecting Chicago with key markets across America during its early days – many seeking new opportunities and challenges beyond their familiar Midwest homespun culture experiences (Leeder 2003). Among these newcomers were men from Denmark who had come overland from Copenhagen on ships arriving at Great Lakes ports; Swedes settled along Huntingdon River west of town; Irishmen established themselves along Dearborn Avenue southwest of town; Poles settled northeast near present day Moline; Armenians made an appearance soon afterwards among others – all drawn by incorporations offered by territorial governments for land grants far inland or westward from major urban centers (Ferguson 2006: 5–7). In addition to social changes wrought throughout these years by waves upon waves OF immigrants�STILL awaited those pioneers�of CHANAHON IN ILLINOIS�soon after they set foot upon American soil�in particular: A better education would be important΢the schools then available generally did not meet expectations΢and work could only begin once children learned how to read and write (Ferguson 2006: 9). Progressions such as electrification brought about improvements not just for frontier farmers but also for larger townsfolk too as well as city dwellers further downstream where services like water mains were installed or improved following outbreaks like cholera’s brief rampage through late 1800s Chicago neighborhoods(Bennett forthcoming Table 1). Electric streetlights illuminated busy downtown streetside locations such as Main Street between Washington avenue/Olympic Boulevard/ Van Buren Street while rural areas still relied on candles or kerosene lamps during evening hours due primarilyto lack thereofCHANAHON’S FIRST ELECTRICITY FACILITIES OPENED IN THE EARLY 19th CENTURY! Channahon was founded in 1836 by the Channahons, a family of farmers. The Channahons were instrumental in developing the town and their farmstead is still extant today. The first store opened in 1837, and the first post office was established in 1840. In 1865, Channahon became a village. In 1903, it became a city.
