Channahon is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. Channahon is one of the oldest towns in Kane County and first settlement date back to 1800. Channahon was named after Captain John Channahon who was killed in 1794 during the French and Indian War. The first post office in Channahon was established on July 16, 1836. The first settler in Channahon was James Laughlin. Mr. Laughlin built a log cabin near present day Highway 20 and US Highway 362. The first store opened in 1865 by Wm Hennessey Jr.. In 1870, Elisha Pate opened a store on the east side of US Highway 362 which stand today as Old World grocery store #4A. In 1912, Drury Akins opened his insurance office adjacent to current day Park Avenue NE. It would be another twenty-five years until the opening of KFC tower which would become one of the most popular restaurants in town with its large parking lot across from KFC tower! In 1922, Mrs Earle Sellers began raising chickens on her farm off village square and they soon became known as “Channahon’s Champions” due to their high quality eggs! By 1930, it had become common for farmers throughout Kane County to sell their eggs through local stores such as Mrs Sellers’ homebased business! After many years of hard work by Mrs Sellers and her helpers, egg production ceased operations around 1975 when antibiotics were developed that made chickens sterile; however, some legacy eggs still remain today at Mrs Sellers’ home! Today there are few if any commercial chicken farms within driving distance of Channahon; however, residents can enjoy fresh eggs from Mrs Sellers every morning at 7:00am or visit her website for recipes using her legacy eggs! The community has experienced several upheavals over the years including two devastating fires (1951 & 1955) that destroyed much of what remains today of old school buildings dating back to 1836-37 - these events left an enduring mark on downtown Channahon where businesses have since redeveloped and new storefronts have been erected winkling along Main Street between First National Bank & Park Avenue NE
