Channahon was founded in 1847 and named for Gideon Channahon, an early settler. The first post office in Channahon was established in 1848. A store and home were built near the present site of the town in 1855. The first school was built in 1861 and opened to students from nearby towns. The first public library was built in 1903. In 1919, Channahon became one of eighteen communities within the Chicago metropolitan area that joined together to form the Metropolitan Cities of Chicago (MCC). In 1984, MCC merged with other metropolitan areas to form the current Chicago-Naperville-Joliet Metropolitan Area (CNA). According to the 2000 census, Channahon has a total area of , Of this land, is waterlogged and contains no oil or gas reserves; it has been designated as a Wetlands Reserve by virtue of its wetness rating under section 6001 of Title 12 of the United States Code. Its name is derived from the Cherokee wordACHANHON, meaning "a place of refuge." The Channahon post office opened on November 15, 1879. It was discontinued on October 9, 1975. In 1912 Channahon had a population of 375 and a school that taught grades one through twelve. In 1955 it had a population of 714 and an elementary school which taught grades one through eight. It closed its doors for good in 1975 after over 50 years in business. Today there are only two residences remaining in Channahon – the old post office building and an old farmhouse known as the Haney House. The first settler to arrive in what is now Channahon was James Witherspoon who built his cabin on the north side of Big Creek on July 6th, 1837. He named his new settlement Channahontown after his father-in-law's home near Chillicothe in Montgomery County, Ohio
