Channahon is a town in Illinois, United States. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. Channahon is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Channahon were French traders and missionaries who landed there in 1779. They named it "Nancy", after their ship which made the discovery. In 1812, General Solomon moved his headquarters from Carthage, Illinois to Channahon and began building a fortification there. He called it Fort Dearborn because he had been awarded the title of General of All America by George Washington. In 1815, the first religious services were held in what is now Channahon when Revolutions Baptist Church was founded by Reverend James Bledsoe and Reverend John White. The first school was opened in 1816 by Mrs Fenton with twelve students under her charge. A post office called Nancy was established in 1819; it later became known as Channahon Post Office Department No 1 (now Pembroke Township). In 1830, David Hogg settled at what is now Channahon with his family and started a wagon trade that would become one of the most important businesses in town for many years. Hogg's wagon company transported goods all over western Illinois until around 1840 when he abandoned wagon travel altogether and turned to railroads for transportation instead The first schoolhouse built in Channahon was erected oncn 1800 by Mrs Fenton as part of her subscription for education at that time . It served as both a public school and an academy until about 1825 when it burned down . In 1840, Mr John Daugherty donated land north of present day High Street for use as a town square; this square remains today known as downtownChannahon In 1850-1851 several buildings were added to northeast corner lot including Female Seminary (now home of St Theresa's Catholic School), First Congregational Church (now Methodist Episcopal church) - these additions are still visible today on property east of High Street between First Streets North and South

The first post office in Channahon was established on December 12, 1872. The present-day town was founded by early settler John Gentry with help from his brother James Gentry and their father Isaac Gentry. Channahon became a village on April 26, 1907. On November 9, 1951, Channahon incorporated as an unincorporated community under the name "Channahon". Channahon is located at (41.560914,-87.860959). According to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (or 2%) is water.[1] As of the census[2] of 2000,[3] there were 1,031 people residing in the town. The population density was 156 people per square mile (61/km²). There were 262 housing units at an average density of 79 per square mile (29/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 99% White and 0% African American. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 3% of the population.
