Champaign, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Champaign County. The population was 25,878 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Illinois after Chicago and Springfield. It is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States. The first European settlers in Champaign were from England, with many of them coming ashore on ships passing through what is now known as Champaign Harbor. In 1813, John Cranch founded a small town called Cumberland on land he had bought from Captain Cook—the first Canadian to visit America—for $5 per acre (2 square miles). By 1830, all of Champaign County had been organized into townships under the jurisdiction of Urbana Township; but because Urbana Township extended into other counties and was not administratively contiguous with any other township or village within Champaign County, residents continued to refer to their home municipality as "Champaign." The city's history dates back to 1795 when French traders established a trading post near present-day downtown Champaign while exploring for fur trade opportunities in what is now Northwestern Illinois. That year, two brothers named Pierre and Jean Baptiste L’Enfant purchased 5 acres (20 ha) along present-day First Street from George Ritchey for £10/acre (4 square miles). They laid out streets and built homes that remain today an important part of downtownChampaign's cultural identity. The site where L’Enfant's original home still stands became State University Park in 1896 when it was annexed by the city; however, UI students continue to use L'Enfant Hall as their main campus residence hall today. In 1847–48 Abraham Lincoln visited UI during his presidential campaign stops in this area; during his speech at Western Union Telegraph Company Building he urged citizens to build up should they become aware that “ southern slavery [was] fpsping rapidly northward” (Quoted In: "Lincoln's Speech at Western Union Telegraph Company Building", Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum website). On November 3rd 1849 local farmers met at Ford House on Washington Street (now eastbound Interstate 45 just south of US 61) to form a meeting point for protesting against shoe storekeeper Ebenezer Molineux who was refusing customers who could not afford shoes poor quality enough quality so they would have something else to wear instead of going without shoes altogether! This event led directly to later actions such as boycotts by local farmers against Molineux throughout December 1849 which ultimately forced him out of business.
