The Illinois National Guard was activated on November 9th, 1861. The regiment was mustered in at Carbondale on December 1st and the first regiment to leave for the Union army was Company K of the Illini (4th Regiment) located in Cary. On April 14th, 1862, my great-grandfather enlisted with Company G of the Illini Regiment at Carbondale. He served until July 1863 when he mustered out and returned home.
