Cary, Illinois was founded in 1836 by John Cary and his wife Hannah. The town was named after General James K. Polk, who had been president at the time of its creation. The first post office in the town was established in 1839. In 1847, the United States Military Academy moved to Cary from West Point and began teaching cadets here. After a brief stint as a small town, Cary grew rapidly thanks to industrialization and immigration from Europe. By 1870, it had over 10,000 residents and was considered one of the largest cities in Illinois. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Cary sided with the Union side and saw significant destruction and loss of life due to artillery fire from Confederate forces on nearby Gettysburg Heights. As a result of this conflict, many people within the city fled or were forced to leave their homes due to violence and destruction wrought by warring factions. Despite this setback, however, Cary recovered quickly and attained an impressive level of development which continues to this day...Today there are more than 20 churches/synagogues within walking distance of downtown Cary; 12 high school districts that serve as schools for children; five business districts; two hospitals; four prisons; three tourist destinations - all within easy reach via car or public transportation...In addition to its rich history, present day Cary is also home to some wonderful local businesses including restaurants such as Pizzeria Bianco (a Michelin starred Italian restaurant) & Sushi Yasuda (a sushi chain). Additionally there are several museums located throughout downtown with special exhibitions each month highlighting an aspect of local culture or history... Overall it can be said that although faced with various challenges since its founding – such as hard times following World War II – today's downtown area remains vibrant with convenient amenities for both locals and visitors alike!

When the area was first surveyed, it was thought to be a place with few inhabitants because of its location on the Great Lakes. However, when trade began to grow between the United States and Europe, Cary quickly became an important center for commerce. In 1832, General Andrew Jackson appointed Colonel Cary as surveyor for the Territory of Illiniwek. As a result, Cary's role in developing Illiniwek led him to become one of the most important citizens of that community. After years of effort, in 1851 Governor John Quinn approved the annexation ofIllinois by Missouri. This event created a great amount of controversy within Illinois because it removed one half of the state from its own government and made it easier for Kansas City to take over many industries in Illinois while leaving Chicago isolated from these businesses.
