Cary, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,824 at the 2010 census. Cary is northwest of Chicago and east of the county seat of Cook. It lies on the banks of the Chicago River. The community was platted in 1856 by Reuben Goldthwait and others as a stop for stagecoaches between Chicago and other nearby towns. In 1867, Cary became an incorporated village with a post office and two stores. The first African American to serve as mayor of Cary was Lucius Youngblood in 1922. In 1925, Julius Rosenwald donated land to make up part of what would become Carver Park—the first public park in Cook County. In 1959, Interstate 95 was built through Cary along its current alignment; this created traffic congestion on Route 31 which had been routed around the town center since its inception. A bypass route was planned but never built due to opposition from local residents who saw it as an economic development opportunity for neighboring Carbondale instead. In 1990s many businesses closed due to deregulation that swept through America during that decade; however, several new businesses have opened since then including two restaurants called "The Current". In 2006-2007 Cary received $1 million in federal stimulus money which went into improving infrastructure such as road repairs and sidewalks within the community while also creating jobs throughout the area.; this project helped revive small business activity in Carver Park which has since seen growth thanks to increased visitation from out-of-towners looking for unique dining experiences within city limits

Cary is a small town in Carbon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Carbondale-Munster Micropolitan Statistical Area. Cary was named after General John Cary and his family, who had settled there in 1847. The first settler in what is now Cary was John Cary Sr., who arrived in 1847 and built a cabin on the site that would become his home. In 1865, he married Anna McMurtry and they moved to southern Illinois where they raised two children: Anna (1866-1937) and John Jr. (1868-1945). After Anna's death, he married Emma Laughlin (1876-1964) and raised their four children: Jane (1902-1980), James W. (1920-1987), Robert H.(1926-) and Nancy E.(1930-) There were no townships within Carbon County when it became organized as a county in 1872; instead, each township formed its own government with three branches: an elected Board of Trustees, responsible for managing finances; an Executive Committee responsible for carrying out specific duties such as law enforcement; and a Supervisor of Elections responsible for electing officials to represent the township at state or national levels. In 1903, Carbondale annexed parts of neighboring Decatur Township which included Cary proper. That year saw also the incorporation of Carbondale into the larger county system; however, because only 5% of Carbondale's population lived within its limits,[1] it never achieved full local self-government status until 1907 when all but one township incorporated.[2] That year saw another annexation by Decatur which added much of present day Uniontown Township including Cary itself.[3] As more people migrated to Carbondale over time - most notably during World War II - property values rapidly rose around town while rents decreased or stayed low due to lack of development outside the core business district centered around downtown Carbondale/Downtown Plaza/The Quadrangle area since these areas were newly developed postwar as businesses grew up surrounding defense plants/manufacturing jobs etc.;[4][5][6][7][8][9] finally achieving full local self-government status on January 1st 1998 when all but one township incorporated into Carbondale under then Mayor Ralph Jaffe’s leadership[10]. Cary was founded in 1834 by John Cary, a white man and his black slave, Sarah. The town became an important railroad center and served as the capital of Illinois from 1847 to 1855. In 1865, it was moved to Chicago due to the American Civil War.
