Cary, Illinois is a town in Hendricks County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,611 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Hendricks County. Coffee has been a major part of life here since its early days as a small farming community. One early coffee farmer in Cary was J.B. Graves who started planting coffee beans in 1875. As the town grew and began to attract industry, coffee became an important commodity for local merchants and residents alike. In 1906, Lester Burch set up his first cafe in what is now downtown Cary with help from his father-in-law John Dvorak who had already founded the Chicago Department Store there two years earlier. The development of downtown Cary led to increased demand for caffeine from businesses and people throughout the region. This growth continued until World War II when war production caused a Decrease in demand for coffee beans across much of the Midwest due to rationing by the Nazi regime. Today, Cary's history reflect its profound connection to coffee - both as a source of beverage and cultural heritage. The history of Cary can be traced back to 1847 when African American settlers first arrived in what is now Kane County. They were primarily farmers whosettled on land that is now the downtown area of Cary. Over time, the African Americans built several homes and businesses in what is now the town center. Today, Cary has a population of over 10,000 people and many businesses are still active despite being around for more than 90 years! The community has actively participated in many local events and initiatives over the years, including helping to create Kane County's first park system. In addition to its cultural attractions, Cary also offers some excellent public schools that provide quality educational opportunities for its residents.
Cary was founded in 1835 by Captain James Cook, who named it after himself. It became a the seat of a circuit court in 1839 and then a town in 1855. The first post office was established in Cary in 1840. In 1862, the Union Battle of Gettysburg occurred near Cary and ensuing skirmishes caused many civilian casualties. By 1863, all of Illinois had become Confederate-controlled, so Cary's neutrality was not assured. The town prospered through the war with its meager supplies coming from New York City and other ports on Lake Michigan. After the war, Cary grew rapidly becoming one of the most populous towns in Illinois. It lost its status as a city when it joined the Chicago metropolitan area in 1984.
