Cary, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,569 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1854 by farmers from nearby Westfield and Peoria with help from the Illinois Central Railroad. The first post office in Cary opened in 1857. By 1880, Cary had a population of 1,200 people and became an agricultural center for the area surrounding it. In 1907, Cary celebrated its centennial with a celebration that included streetcars running through downtown streets as well as a parade and ballgame between the local schools and one of the city's largest companies. During World War II, Cary helped form Camp Grant on land near today's Airport Drive to house soldiers training for overseas service. After the war ended in 1945, many of those who had grown up in Cary returned to live there or keep their businesses open while they looked for opportunity elsewhere. However, some stayed until after the community cleaned up following years of damage caused by two tornadoes that struck during that decade. In 1984, three-time winner of America's Best Place to Live (AMPLIFIER) magazine's "Best Cities" award - then known as "The BEST" - Cary became one of twenty-six communities featured on NBC's new "Community." That same year saw growth when developer John Fritsch bought much of what is now downtown fromarcrest Properties Corporation - one of Chicago's largest real estate firms - making him one of only a handful of developers to have such control over an entire downtown district since Mayor Richard Moccia came into office in 1978%. Today,[2015], Downtown Cary remains vibrant and eclectic with multiple restaurants serving everything from pizza to Thai food; several large stores including Macy’s and Sears anchors central business district; high-end apartments are available throughout most portions; active transportation options abound including IKEA across Town Hall Square;[and] more than 15 miles (24 km) worth of walking trails make this community attractive both physically[and] economically.[1]
