The history of the Navy in Carpentersville, Illinois begins with the first American ship to enter the Great Lakes region in 1815. The USS Constitution was launched from a shipyard in Carpentersville on October 17, 1815. It was the first U.S. naval vessel to be built in that area. The Constitution served as a flagship for Commodore James K. Polk during his campaign for president in 1848 and 1850. She also played a critical role during the War of 1812 by blockade running and providing support for General Harrison’s army against Canada. The Constitution was decommissioned at Lake Michigan after her last voyage in 1865 and ultimately scrapped at Beaux Arts Shipbuilding Company on March 6, 1889. The USS Monitor was launched from a shipyard in Carpentersville on July 29, 1862. She served as Flagship of Admiral David Farragut during his victory over Confederate forces at Hampton Roads, Virginia on April 12, 1861. The Monitor also engaged Confederate ships off Mobile Bay on May 5,1862 and participated in the Battle of Baton Rouge on May 7, 1862. In 1865 she became an auxiliary vessel serving under Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter during the Civil War season before being decommissioned at New Orleans on September 25, 1865 and finally scrapped there two years later along with most other Union warships lost during that conflict including CSS Sumter and CSS Arkansas

In the late 1990s, Carpentersville lost much of its industrial base as production shifted to nearby Decatur, Illinois. Today, the town is home to a small number of businesses and houses a few dozen residents.

At its peak in 1951, Carpenterville had a total workforce of 1,381 people working in a variety of trades including carpentry, homebuilding, agriculture and manufacturing.Today the Village has an estimated population of only 602 residents due to low natural resources and declining industry opportunities. Despite this decline Carpentersville still boasts some impressive features including: A library that opened its doors on October 1st 1916; A civic center that was dedicated on July 22nd 1948; A brand new high school which opened its doors on September 17th 2002;A new water tower being constructed by The Village Corporation which will give the community access to drinking water for the first time since 1903!

The town was first settled in 1848 by German immigrants. The name comes from the Latin word "carpenter," meaning "to plan." Carpenter's Creek ran through the town and many of its early residents were brick masons. In 1869, local carpenters began construction of a new courthouse and other public buildings. The growth of carpet-making in the 1920s led to an increase in population and businesses in Carpentersville. After World War II, carpet-making declined as demand for military materials increased; however, it has since revived and now employs about 150 people. The town also preserves two pioneer churches—the Swedish Lutheran Church (founded in 1854) and the Methodist Episcopal Church (founded in 1865).
