On November 1, 1898, the Navy was activated with its first ship, USS Constitution. In 1945, the navy closed its base in Carpentersville after 46 years of service. However, it reopened in 2002 as the Naval Reserve Fleet at Edwards Island Naval Shipyard. The naval history of Carpentersville goes back to 1892 when the temporary volunteer fleet was formed under orders from Mayor John Haggerty Jr.. Thefleet served for three months before being disbanded on October 15th due to lack of volunteers. Two years later on April 6th 1899 USS Constitution sailed into town for her first visit since arriving from Norfolk Virginia days earlier! That same year Captain John Ransom became Commanding Officer of USS Constitution & enjoyed many successful patrols off Carpentersville waters until his death on May 21st 1901 while serving with Squadron 5 out of Stonington Connecticut In 1903 USS Constitution's homeport was moved from Norfolk VA to Greencastle Indiana where she remained for six seasons until 1906 when she again moved homeport to Fort Worth Texas where she remained until 1912 when she finally arrived at Erie PA permanently! She would stay there for another eleven seasons before returning homeported back to Carpentersville IN from 1922-1927 In 1928-1929 USS Constitution again made her homeport here at Fort Indianapolis IN permanent after spending time stationed at White Sands NM During this timeCaptain James Ladd relieved Captains Ransom & Connery who both had died suddenly unknown causes while commanding their ships After two years decommissioning duty he took command of USS Constellation which stayed here until 1932 when she returned homeported back here permanently once more!
