Carpentersville is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 508 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city was incorporated on December 12, 1871. The first mention of carpentry being done in Carpentersville was in an article from the Harpers Ferry Democrat dated October 25, 1881 which reported that Wm. Aikens had built a new house and barn for his family in the town and it would be some time before anyone else located here did too because “the trade is still carried on by those who know how to do it well” (quoted in "Carpentersville: Pioneer Town" by Florence Wilcox). In 1892, Henery Sappington opened his sawmill and began supplying local mills with lumber. This allowed carpentry to take off as a craft industry within Carpentersville. In 1895, L & J Gorman started contracting out construction work for businesses and individuals throughout Cook County using their own sawmills as well as other contractors they had brought into the fold. By 1896, carpentry had become such an important part of Carpentersville's economy that John Fenton set up shop here himself - becoming one of its most successful businessmen (Fenton Papers). John Fenton passed away in 1922 but his legacy lives on through his son-in-law Clyde Dickson who ran a furniture store next door to Fenton's business until it closed down around 1990s when carpenters went back into decline (Dickson Papers). The first post office was established in 1839, and the town name was changed to Carpentersville in 1865 because of its location on Carpenter Road (now US-27). At that time, most of Carpentersville lay within what is now DeKalb County; however, some residents moved to rural Butler Township east of Carbondale until 1959 when that township became part of Cook County. In 1903, a sawmill was built by George C. Lawlor and it quickly became one of the largest and most successful businesses in the community. The mill continued producing lumber until it closed in 1925 due to wear and tear from years of use. The building still stands today as a museum dedicated to Lawlor and his business career."
