The United States Air Force has a long and proud history of gifting items to its members. So, on December 7th 1941 (the day before America entered into World War II), The New York Times published an article about "A Gift for the Air Forces." This article noted that Major General Leslie Groves had requested Representative Harold Ickes provide him with 100 cigars as a gift for his staff officers in theAAF. The cigar gift proved itself to be successful and soon other branches of the American military followed suit. By 1945, all branches of the American armed forces had their own gift shops where they could purchase cigars from major generals and admirals. It wasn't until 1996 when legislation was passed which forced all branch commanders to give out cigarettes instead of cigars as part of their holiday gifts. Today Carpentersville is home to one of the USAF's largest gift stores which specializes exclusively inairforce gifts! The Carpentersville Air Force Base gift history began in 1945 when the United States Air Forceactivated the base. The first gifts were a few radios and tools to help with the new air force. From there, things grew and soon, the base had a full-fledged gift shop! In 1957, the Air Force started awarding scholarships to military students from Carpentersville. This program continued until 1972 when it was replaced by the USAF Academy Graduation Scholarship Program. Through this program, Carpentersville residents have been able to attend some of America's most prestigious colleges and universities!
Carpentersville is a town in Normal Township, DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in Carpentersville were John Carpenter and his family who arrived in 1812. They built a small cabin on the banks of the Willamette River. The first store in Carpentersville was established by Nicholas Sprague in 1825. The town grew rapidly from its original population of only fifty-six people to one thousand by 1857. By 1870, Carpentersville had become a borough and contained two hotels and several stores and houses. In 1914, the Borough of Carpentersville merged with the Township to formNormal Township which still exists as an independent municipality today. In 1915, Carpenter's son-in-law James Speed founded Speedway Motorsports Association (now known asSpeedway Racing Corporation) which would later become one of the largest sports car manufacturers in history with races all aroundthe world including racetracks like Daytona Beach and Monte Carlo. In 1922, Speedway opened its new location on State Street just south of present day Elmhurst Avenue and soon became America’s most successful speedway with over 1 million spectators watching races every year! In 1938 Carbide Mining Company successfully acquired majority ownership of Carpentersville from Sprague’s heirs resulting in construction of what would eventually be Carbide’s biggest mine yet – a $30 million project that employed more than three thousand men for more than two years! Today, Carbide continues to play an important role in our community through their ongoing development projects such as headquarters for Northwestern Illinois University (NIU), housing for Northern Illinois University students and staff alike as well as retail space for local businesses across multiple blocks on Elmhurst Avenue between Sixty-fourth Street and Seventeenth Street!
Since the beginning of the 20th century, airforce gift history has been filled with momentous moments. Here are five of the most memorable air force gifts in history. 1) Flying Fortress planes In 1939, the United States Air Force commissioned its first flying fortress, the F-4A Phantom II. This plane was designed as a high-precision offensive bomber that could outpace and outstrip any other fighter in its class. In recognition of this new plane’s importance, The General Dynamics Corporation donated two flying fortresses – one for each wing – to the USAF. These planes were known as “The Sacred Flamingo” and “The Fighting Falcon.” The RAF gifted four Hurricane MkIIIs (nicknamed “The Darlings”) to the USAF in 1947 in order to help bolster America’s strategic bombing capabilities during World War II. Additionally, Republic pneumatics gave three P-47 Thunderbolts (nicknamed “Peanut butter cups”) to Fighter Squadron 108 at Langley AFB in Virginia in 1945 as a thank you for their support during combat operations over Japan during World War II. 2) Manned Maneuvering Unit Aircraft (MMUAs) In 1958, America awarded Lockheed Martin an contract to design and build what would become called the Manned Maneuvering Unit Aircraft (MMUAs). These vehicles were intended as a backup system for manned spacecraft while they underwent repairs or undergotesting on Earth or space missions. With their advanced technology and ingenious design, MMUAs paved the way for future spaceflights by providing additional landing capabilities when compared to traditional helicopters or airplanes. Additionally, these vehicles proved invaluable during Operation Crossroads –the Apollo moon landing mission– which saw American astronauts walk on the lunar surface for the first time ever! As a result of this significant achievement, LockheedMartin was given an $800 million contract by NASA to continue development of MMUAs into our present day! In 1953, the USAF was created and it became its own branch of the military. During this time, the USAF gave more than $2 billion in gifts to other branches of the military. The last AFB gift was given in 1978.
Carpentersville is a town in Carpentersville County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,730 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Carpentersville was James Hickey who arrived in 1836. He and his family built a log cabin on the east side of Route 6 near present day Midway Lake. A few years later, Isaac Stephenson moved to Carpentersville from Decatur and founded the first store in what is now the downtown core of Carpentersville. In 1843, John Pritchard established a tannery on land now known as Old Town Square. In 1846, Jotham Morse opened a gristmill that powered one of the early cotton ginners in Illinois. In 1853, David Sperry started construction on what would become Sperry University which became one of America's most renowned universities after it was founded by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail. Many early residents came to Carpentersville to work at various businesses including these: farmers such as Elijah Dixon (who operated a large corn crib), milliners like Rebecca Shore (whose shop graced Main Street until 1906 when it burned down), coal miners such as John Masterman and William McFarlane, lumberjacks like George Willis and Hiram Lordecky and more recently home builders like Jay Gopnik and Bob Hope. Today many businesses remain active - including locally owned restaurants such as Mr."s" Diner & Grill; small shops throughout town including Joe's Barber Shop (since 1986); four churches - St Mark's Episcopal Church (founded 1886), First Baptist Church (founded 1889), Methodist Episcopal Church (founded 1909) and Second ProtestantChurch(founded 1914). Additionally there are numerous private residences complete with gardens or yards complete with all sortsof equipment used by today's homeowners - both suburbanitesand urbanites alike!
