The Village of Carpentersville was organized on November 12, 1871 when the Township of Morgan merged with the Village of Carpentersville. The first president of the new village was A.H. Herndon and James Sibley were also appointed trustees to establish schools and make other necessary arrangements for a nascent community that would grow rapidly over the next few years. During its early years, Carpentersville experienced some growth due to its location near large railroad yards and factories which attracted workers from all around the country. By 1886, construction had begun on what would become known as "The Great Western Railway" Passenger Depot which would soon be one of largest commercial buildings in town. This addition not only increased business for local merchants but also created more jobs for carpenter/cabinetmakers who built both inside and outside of the depot walls. This continued economic development led to an increase in population due to waves of newcomers settling in town during those years and well into the 20th century; by 1910 there were 519 residents living within walking distance of Municipal Hall and 1,548 people residing within a five-mile radius including portions of neighboring townships such as Garnett (now West Dundee) and Addison (now Arlington Heights). Additionally, many citizens worked in larger businesses located several miles west or north west of town while others resided in nearby villages like South Elgin or Wheaton until their own incorporation by Morgan County in 1924.
