The Coffee House at 4th Street and Washington Avenue was one of the most important businesses in town during this time. The first coffee roasters in Carol Stream were John Witherspoon and his son Alexander Witherspoon. John Witherspoon began roasting beans in 1817 and opened his business at 9th and Main Streets. His son, Alexander Witherspoon, started roasting beans from 1828 until his death in 1875. Alexander Witherspoon's sons continued their father's business until 1907. The first coffee factory in Carol Stream was built by George Prentice in 1892. At that time, he imported Brazilian coffee into America and commenced manufacturing coffee filters, mills, water tanks, sacks (for holding ground coffee), etc., all under one roof. In 1912 Prentice moved his factory to 419 Nombre de la Raza Place after acquiring it from Abraham Lincoln Dodge Jr.. Carol Stream is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 13,868 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth most populous city in Illinois. Creek Community College and Illinois State University are located in Carol Stream. The town of Carol Stream was founded by General David Dixon in 1833 as a small community on the banks of the Chicago River. Dixon named it after his wife, Caroline (1784-1859). The first store opened on May 6, 1835, and two years later the first post office was established. Dixon's brother-in-law John Gregg built a gristmill on the river in 1838 which became one of the largest mills in America. In 1840 Dixon donated land to build a school for three hundred students and also donated funds for an irrigation system that included several miles of pipelines. In 1845 he donated another acres to establish a park which served as an open space for public use until 1959 when it was annexed into City Park District No. 1 In 1830 there were only 22 people living in Carol Stream; by 1860 there were over 1,200 people living there with 350 businesses and 200 homes. There were also five schools: one elementary school (opened in 1836), one high school (opened in 1865), two churches (one Congregationalist, one Methodist), and four stores: Gregg's Store (founded 1795), Bemis & Pritzker's Post Office (1846), Goodrich & Nicollet's Grocery Store (1851), and Dixon Brothers' Clothing Store #1 (founded 1853). By 1870 there were 10 fire companies serving 8 wards; by 1910 there were 16 fire companies serving 24 wards In 1850 $2 million had been invested in real estate development throughout Cook County; within twenty years this had increased to $30 million In 1861 Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States; six months later he announced plans for new railroad bonds with a value of $20 million On October 3rd 1860 "The Chicago Tribune" published an article about what they called "a great movement towards centralization" within American society Carol Stream has always been tightly knit with its sister cities from across Cook County including Wheaton RidgeVillage(now Wheaton North High School)and Glen Ellyn(now Glenbrook South High School). As technology improved over time and presses became available with greater capacity; largescale production became possible for all types of coffees including light/medium roastings like Robusta, Toraja Puchongan (Sumatra), Kenyan Arabica etc., while still providing high quality single origin products at low costs per ounce
