Carol Stream is a community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,713 at the 2010 census. Carol Stream was originally named "Carolyn" after the then-wife of John Stephenson, who donated the land for the community. The name was changed in 1912 to honor Mrs. Frances May Haggerty (1858-1937), one of the first women admitted to the bar in Illinois. The first post office opened in 1903 and continued until it was discontinued in 1922. The town site was surveyed by Wm. Hance on November 22, 1881 and platted on December 5th by George McCoy and others under license from the State of Illinois. A gristmill built by Augustus Fenton & Co., now known as United Mill #2, operated here until 1906 when it closed due to depletion of water supplies caused by deforestation near Glenview Lake. The first schoolhouse was built in 1907 and remained operational until it burned down in 1945; however, a new schoolhouse has been erected on this site since that time which continues to serve as the town's primary educational facility today. In 1915, another gristmill became operational downstream from United Mill #2 and remained active until its closure also due to depletion of water supplies six years later; however, a new mill has since been established here which continues to operate today as United Mill #3! In 1927, Carol Stream became home to one of America’s first municipally owned television networks when WGN America began operations there with equipment provided by American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T). That same year saw also establishment of America’s second municipally owned radio station WWJZ with transmitter located atop an abandoned coal mine near present day Carbondale Shopping Center! In 1951 local entrepreneur Art Pepper controversially founded Pepper’s Pizza here – one of America’s earliest drive-in pizza restaurants! Around this time too businesses such including Blessed Sacrament Little Italy were established within walking distance of each other making Carol Stream perhaps one of Americas most interconnected communities!
Carol Stream was a small town in central Illinois, located on the banks of the River Kankakee. The community was founded in 1836 by refugees from nearby Peoria, Illinois. The name "Carol Stream" comes from the Caron Creek, which flows through the town. The first post office in Carol Stream was established in 1837. The population of CarolStream was approximately 100 people at its peak in the 1840s. Over time, however, business and social life declined as more and more people moved to larger towns and cities in central Illinois. By 1860, CarolStream had only six residents remaining. In 1865, a group of Methodist ministers led by Rev. J.B. Heiser organized a church here and began preaching services outdoors on warm summer days. This work helped grow the congregation considerably and within two years they had built a church building on Main Street (now known as First United Methodist Church). Reverend Heiser also started giving school lessons here to children who could not attend local schools due to distance or lack of financial resources. In 1870, he donated land east of Main Street for an agricultural college that became known as Northern Illinois University today! The decline of Carol Stream began soon after this; over time it lost population rapidly while becoming increasingly rural with less access to amenities such as grocery stores or large parks like those found in larger towns throughout central Illinois at that time: all these factors combined made CarolStream an attractive place for criminals to hide out during law enforcement operations - one such criminal is said to have been responsible for setting off three gunshots inside the local store during an attempted robbery back in 1904!
