The United States Army gift history can be traced back to the Revolutionary War. In 1775, General George Washington ordered the erection of a military fort in Carol Stream, Illinois. The fort served as a base of operations for the Continental Army and was later renamed Fort Knox. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln became President of the United States and ordered the formation of an army. The first U.S.Army unit to arrive in Illinois was the 9th Infantry Regiment, which arrived in Carol Stream on November 15, 1861. The regiment was part of what is known as the Union Expeditionary Force and fought in various battles throughout Illinois before being sent to Fortress Monroe on Virginia's Eastern Shore for duty with Confederate forces. While stationed at Fort Knox, members of the 9th Infantry Regiment metamorphosed into Company D of 1st Battalion (6th Iowa) Infantry Regiment (Navy), which arrived in January 1862 at Rock Island Arsenal aboard USS "Iowa" under command of Captain Isaiah Prentiss Jr., son of Captain Isaiah Prentiss who had commanded Company F (1st Wisconsin) Infantry Regiment at Antietam earlier that year. After disembarking from "Iowa", Company D joined up with other units surrounding Chicago while awaiting orders from their colonel commanding them on March 4teenth; they were then transferred to General Orders No 2 dated April Fool's Day 1862 and given battle dress uniforms instead of parade dress uniforms like their predecessors – this order appears to have been made simply due to confusion over who shouldered arms when war began! After service at Rock Island Arsenal until May 1863 when they sailed for Norfolk, Virginia where they engaged in blockade duty along US coastal waters until September 1864 when they sailed for Bermuda where they arrived just prior to General Grant's march against Richmond November 14-18 64; these soldiers played a major role in defending Bermuda against Confederate attacks during that campaign as well as helping open up Charleston Harbor so that ships could enter naval ports unimpeded by Confederate forces! Following their service with Union Forces duringthe American Civil War, many members of Companies D & E re-joined the Regular Army after Reconstruction began following his inauguration as President Ulysses S Grant on April 12 1865; this means that there are currently over 100 descendants living within miles or even close proximity to those original company members!
