Carol Stream, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 68,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. The city's nickname is "The City of Stars". The Carol Stream area was first settled in the early 1800s by German immigrants and their descendants. A post office called Carol Stream was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1888. In 1865, John Fenton built a small sawmill on the Scioto River adjacent to what is now the City of Carol Stream. By 1870, most of present-day Carol Stream had been developed as a result of Fenton's milling business and other economic ventures. A large flour mill became operational in 1901; it remains one of the largest flour mills located in Cook County today. In 1910, Chicagoan Harland Sanders purchased 1% interest in Fenton's mill and began making paper products thereon. The mill continued to operate until it closed down for good in 1949; all that remains of it are some foundations and a few trees near where it once stood. After World War II ended, industrial production declined throughout much of northern Illinois due largely to wartime restrictions on equipment manufacturing (the Korean War being an especially significant exception). However, industries such as publishing and plastics resumed growth beginning around 1970 following deregulation across America which created new opportunities for such businesses to flourish outside traditional marketsplaces (e.g., Europe). This resurgence led to significant job growth for locals within local glass factories (now known as glass blowers), auto parts suppliers (now known as automotive parts suppliers), textiles manufacturers (now known as clothing retailers) etc., resulting in many homes becoming newly occupied over time – something that can still be seen throughout town today!
