By 1850, they had moved to their current location where they continued farming until 1852 when they constructed the first school house within town limits which served as a school for four years before becoming private property again until it became part of ISU campus in 1895. The following year, December 6th, 1853 saw another early settler arrive into town when James Hickey set out from Jacksonville Landing on an oxcart with 3 barrels of oil he had brought overland from Texas just prior to that same year’s Ulysses S Grant Presidential inauguration as President of the United States! Hickey’s purchase helped create much excitement throughout society at that time as scores more settlers followed suit soon after his arrival! It wasn’t long before friends and business partners James Hickey and Joseph Wehner helped build what would eventually become known as “Hickey’s Store” – America’s first modern grocery store! By 1861, carbondales citizens had erected a brick courthouse which still stands today across from the ISU Campus Administration Building; this building served as both courtrooms for local government proceedings during those years and also housed many OFA office space during its tenure! The courthouse played host to many famous events such as hearings related to Abraham Lincoln’s trial for treason back on March 14th & 15th 1865; dozens if not hundreds of spectators3 lined up along North Main Street outside waiting patiently their turn inside while judicial officers conducted transactions within!!! In addition, other important civic events held at this courthouse include: Mayoralty debates between Mayor David Aiken & Alderman Daniel McGrath; public hearings relating to various land questions submitted by residents; etc….. This building was replaced by our current structure following arson damage suffered by individuals unknown during its original construction date!! TheSimons Drugstore thrived thruout prohibitionist times spreading prohibitionist propaganda all over northern Illinois!!!!! Unfortunately due primarilyto lackof insurance capitalization (& hence lackof investment) it failed completely (& remains vacant ever since)BIG MISTAKE BY WILMINGTON SIMONS!!!!! In 1955 Carbondale became one of six communities within present-day Kane County to form the nucleus of present-day Chicago; since then Carbondale has played an important role in both its neighbor's development and its own growth as a bedroom community for Chicagoland residents statewide.
