The city is home to two colleges: Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU-C) and DePaul University (PU).

Carbondale, Ill. is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 22,786 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. Carbondale was founded in 1839 by James Wirth and other early settlers in what is now Carbondale Township. It became a city on December 12, 1904. The original street plan for Carbondale called for four main streets running north-south: State Street (now US 50), First Avenue (now Elmhurst Avenue), Second Avenue (now Washington Boulevard), and Third Avenue (now Community Boulevard). However, due to a fire that destroyed much of the city center on December 12, 1904, only First and Second avenues remained as part of the original street plan when Carbondale became a city. The first mayor of Carbondale was John Henniker and the first City Councilmember was George Prentice. The current Mayor is Lisa Madigan with James Thompson as her Vice Mayor
